This rant is in no way against the Winter Wonderland promoters or Venue. This rant is about the Chicago scene as a whole.
Also, there are six truly down ass people that I met that aren’t the cause of this rant: Chris the DJ- (A Bomb ass dancer!), Mark, Kandy Jill, Noir, Roberto & B/F. I read a thread a while back that talked about just how closed off and unsociable the people of the Chicago rave scene really are. Because I have had really positive experiences in the past at other events in other cities, I was slow to judge the Chicago scene. Unfortunately, after my experiences at my first Chicago rave, Winter Wonderland, I have to agree with the earlier writer. To validate my point, let me tell you where I am coming from. I lived in New Orleans for three years, which is where I was introduced to the rave culture. Every time I went to a rave I met an ass load of new people. Not once have I ever gone to a rave in NOLA without having a good time. Even when my friends couldn’t get off work and I went to a rave by myself- I still had a great time, because the scene was filled with people that understood the true spirit of raves. I was taught that the true spirit of raves was much deeper than the fashion and the drugs. The purpose of raves was so that people from all walks of life could gather together to have a good time, enjoy the music, and above all, be free to be themselves. Now, I am a good kid, I have a kind and giving heart, and I have been told that I am pretty easy on the eyes- That being said, I have NEVER had to put so much energy into meeting other people at a rave. Ever. It seems that the notion of *Peace, *Love *Understanding, *Respect and *Responsibility really hasn’t transferred to the Midwest. True, Wonderland was my first rave in Chicago, so I can only judge the scene on one rave- but Damn! A few notes to the masses: Kandy is NOT a fashion statement. Kandy is supposed to represent the bonds that you make with others during these raves. At the end of the night, you really shouldn’t have any of the Kandy that you brought with you- instead, you should have a whole new set of Kandy from all the people that you met and exchanged with. I didn’t have time to make Kandy this time, but almost as soon as I bought some Glow wristbands I was passing them on to a trio of girls that were kickin’ some butt on the dance floor. You Girls rock! The 3-word conversation is really tired. It isn’t the venue that makes the rave- not the decorations, the drugs, nor the Thump of the bass. It is the crowd of PEOPLE that make a rave. It is for that reason that we should be as social as possible, meeting all our brothers and sisters of House Music. When my clique in NOLA got together at a rave, we would purposely go out of our way to meet others that weren’t with a group as large as ours. Here, one small clique stays isolated from another- Is that really P*L*U*R*R*? All in all, I am still happy that I went to Winter Wonderland, but I am really second-guessing another venture into Chi Town’s Scene. Everyone who reads this is welcome to disagree, but I hope that my disappointment in the scene sparks some kind of change for the better. Without change, Chicago’s scene will never be as healthy as some other cities’- which is sad, since House music was born in Chicago… Tryin’ to keep it P*L*U*R*R* Glenn |

i agree with alot of your points techknow1derpimp
i'm fairly new in the scene(hell i just signed up at RL few days ago) and i've only been to about 5-6 parties. i actually skipped winter wonderland(or rather didn't try that hard to go) because of the parties i've been to in chicago before. i'm born here but i've been in the northwest for the last 3-4 years and thats where i went to my first rave at earlier this year, up in seattle. i'd have to say that was one of the best nights of my life. not because of the music so much or the venue, but like u said because of the people and general atmosphere. now i'm back here, none the old friends i have left here goto raves so i'm usually rollin solo. and i get the same closed off vibe that u got. i'm not the most socialble guy in the world but the more i see other people tryin to make new friends the more i will. it hasn't been too bad though so i hope i'm not complaining too much. i've had a semi-good time at most of the parties here, and met some cool people. its just that theres still something missing. i'm still really grateful there is a scene here and since i'm stuck here for the next 3 years or so i'll be commin to alot of the future parties(really lookin forward to countdown 06) |

but i do understand what you're saying. Not many people wear candy any more. BUt at the last party in omaha I had people left and right wanting to exchange conversation for bracelets. which is pretty cool, check out this decked out fool at the last party.
If you want to find the true spirit you need to check omaha. Small parties, but there is an old school krew there that carries an awesome vibe. |

i'm sorry to hear that the chicago scene has changed so much.
i was raised in the scene in the early nineties, and it wasn't anything like you described! how can the birth place of house music be so anti-social? sad. although i don't think that the scene anywhere is what it used to be. we have the power to change that. peace. by the way, it started originally as "peace, love, and unity"...the respect came much later. as for the plurr: times change. things change. i actually like the addition of "responsibility", due to the fact that the scene got highly irresponsible not too long ago. |
