I'll explain it how I understand it and see it
Happy hardcore - spawned in the early/mid 90s, has less of a beat then "darker" hardcore did, alot more synth and cheesey vocals, heavy (but not very heavy) distorted bass like all hardcore, died out late 90s, early 2000's UK Hardcore - Pretty much the "new" happy hardcore with alot of differences. sounds much more trancy, ALOT more vocal tracks then in its father genre, a heavier beat and bass, less synth lead tracks. this is basically what happy hardcore is now. Not sure about upfront hardcore, maybe that means like..any hardcore that can't be categorized? anyways, those are sort of just my definitions ![]() |

Happy hardcore also retains many samples from its jungle and breakbeat hardcore predecessors. Its not uncommon to hear jungle drum loops played over a 4/4 beat in happy hardcore, and many a time a 4/4 happy hardcore song will break down entirely into a breakbeat.
Lots of UK hardcore is really just like eurodance except at 170 bpm instead of 140. I grew up on euro; I'm not ashamed to say I still listen to it occasionally, and I can't tell you how many countless uk hardcore anthems owe their entire lyrics and melody to euro tracks. Upfront hardcore is a term used by dj's to refer to new, fresh and sometimes unreleased tracks. Thats how it was explained to me at least. |

There are plenty of tracks like that, but there are also tons of UK hardcore songs (not old school jungley hardcore) that got their lyrics directly from euro. It goes both ways though, absolutely.
