At age 6 he went through his parents' record collection of early 80's stuff and got into making disco mix-tapes for the parties they threw on their diplomatic missions abroad. Having lived in the US, Africa, Russia and the Middle East, the turning point came during his first Berlin Love Parade in 1997, where Bakh witnessed a crowd of 1 million music aficionados gyrating in unison to electronic rhythms. Early 2000's caught Bakh diving head-first into the tiny techno scene in Boston. After co-piloting a series of parties under the monicker of Institution 6 Bakh went completely underground, playing exclusive private loft after-parties on the infamous Newbury street with the likes of Josh Wink and Christian Smith. As the sound of techno gained increasing popularity in Boston, Bakh collaborated together with great bean-town collectives such as Redlight Productions of the Wednesdays @ The Phoenix Landing fame, WERS 88.9 Revolutions Radio Show, Studio 808, RobotLoveSongs and MakeItNew, throwing a series of exceptional parties under the guise of The World in Technocolor. Having hosted and played alongside Fred Giannelli aka The Kooky Scientist (Plus 8, Telepathic), Phil Quenum (Num, Cadenza, Soma) and Akiko Kiyama (Contexterrior, Thema, Revolver) Bakh finally felt that he outgrew Boston. As a recent NYC resident Bakh continues to push the envelope of technology and techno. An early adopter of Final Scratch, Serato and all things digital, Bakh constantly seeks out new sounds from the Open Source movement as well as through his vast network of artistic friends. His every set is unique (which is why he is against his sets being recorded), using loops and effects, with tracks that have not been heard (or have long been forgotten) yet that will undoubtedly make you move. ![]() connie queens . halcyon Born and raised in Queens, New York City, Connie appeared in the electronic music scene five years ago and has become a familiar face in the NYC underground house/techno scenes. She will be spinning in Athens, Greece in October. When she first became a part of New York's dance scene, Connie was shocked to see how few women were DJ-ing the many parties around town. Never one to settle, she has been teaching women to spin for over two years. To date, Connie has had 15 students. In addition, Connie is teaming up with Halcyon Record Store to foster and promote local female DJs via an event called "Ladies' Night," which features a new female DJ spinning on-site every Thursday. ![]() cloud cat nyc . third ear Clout Cat is a student of the older school of techno, with heavy influences coming from Detroit wizards such as Derrick May and Suburban Knight and from other jocks such as Terry Mullan and the Wicked Crew. As opposed to conforming to one sound, however, his intention is to conjure up mixtures of techno, house, and electro to cast a funky spell on the Rizumu faithful. ![]() rekall philadelphia . actualmusic i am a sum total of my primary influences and the tools at hand; nothing more and (hopefully) nothing less. i tend to err on the side of breakbeat machine-melody because of a strict diet of autechre, aphex twin, b12, orbital and basically as much of the warp and ffrr catalogues circa 1994 i could get my hands on as an escape from the high school pop/rock idolatry all around me... that same year i traded a well-loved but obsolete ibm xt for a gravis ultrasound and amidst its installed software i found an amiga .mod player and several songs. that one day started me down a path to composing and releasing a great many tunes under my former theHacker monicker for klf (kosmic loader foundation), later renamed kfmf (kosmic free music foundation)... and then college happened, full-time employment, subsequent disenfranchisement from cubicle livelihood, purchasing and mucking about with analogue drum machines and synths (as my own personal reward for tolerating soul-numbing employment), locating hangouts and discovering local hero dj's, starting my own record collection, 'giving back' in the form of playing out as much as i could... all of that was a detour from original music production but a necessary one. i was able to return with a better understanding of the method behind the madness of electronic music and the principles governing people's reaction to it... over time, i've learned and scrapped endless software, and bought and sold more gear than i ever expected to have in the first place, but now i feel i've gotten things down to that which allows me to capture a musical idea (from a dream, upon waking, or a mental pause during the day) with as few technical concerns as possible (editing should follow expression)... all the while, not forgetting the music i heard half my lifetime ago that started me seeking a soundtrack for the future promised in our parents' days (fully-automatic kitchens, hovercraft highways) but not yet realized... when faced with this juxt between status quo and plausible reality, i often repeat the mantra: what would kraftwerk do? perhaps, make music that may inspire the creation of that future... some perfectly infectious squarewave refrain reminding us that we as humans are capable of wonderful things if we only use the tools we create in the context of their intended purpose... |
