MATT KNYC . RYAN VANDERBECK - LIVE PA PITTSBURGH / PENNSYLVANIA [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] "Techno has funk, techno has soul, techno has some feeling that it's trying to get out and move the listener to." Shawn Rudiman is probably called a DJ more often than an artist. Even in a culture that apparently knows the difference between techno and drum and bass, few people can appreciate the wholesome goodness of a B200, HR-16b and a SE-50 effects box in place of the turntables and a crate of records. You won't find Shawn on the turntables too often, well, because, playing other people's music just isn't his thing. How is an artist supposed to break through in this DJ based culture when the DJ is the star more often than the producer who actually makes the tracks the DJ is playing? In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Shawn defies the mentality of "God is a DJ" and pushes the envelope with live sets of amazingly emotional high tech funk. In 1989 Shawn Rudiman started production work with Ed Vargo on THD (Total Harmonic Distortion). This EBM/Elektro unit became quite popular in the EBM/ industrial scene of the early to mid 90's, releasing 4 full-length albums, countless remixes and compilation releases on European and domestic labels. Along with this, there is a fascination with old music machines developed that led him to techno. In 1997 he decided to retire the long worn out industrial EMB ideals. This led to a move towards pure rhythm and sounds, and relocation to Pittsburgh, PA. The transition period was difficult due to a scaling back of sound layers and refinement of rhythms, but results proved positive. At the same studio production began with techno, so did live sets. Sets of non-stop, all live improvised techno, as fluid and smooth as any DJ set, but entirely flexible in direction and tempo. He then started Hypervinyl Records with Trevor Combee. This led to meeting Anthony Shakir and that to releasing tracks for Dan Bell and 7th City etc. He and friend Jwan Allen have since started a new label, Technoir Audio. * The past year techno has been pushed up to America's mainstream standard as (gasp!) REAL MUSIC. Holding it's own in tours around the country, having a festival celebrating one of the few genres of music that was created in America. Detroit did it; Europe fully understands it, but still, we all know people who regard any sort of music made with machines as 'Techno'. If it goes 'boom boom' it's techno. This is only because average America cannot distinguish the difference. This is all changing, slowly but surely. Techno can stand on it's own, and it's about fucking time. Shawn is leading the second generation of Techno's coming, composing innovative music that isn't a second-generation rip off. -Michelle Matuza ![]() MICHA KLANG NÜRNBERG / GERMANY [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] / MOTHERSHIP / KISS KLUB Micha Klang's style is marked by a love for long sets of minimal, textured tech-house and crunchy, crispy techno beats. Originating in Nürnberg in the late ‘90s, Micha Klang quickly broke ground with his ‘Mothership’ event. ‘Summership’, an open air event in an old castle was attended by thousands. ‘Mothership’ recently celebrated its 6th Anniversary, headlining Sven Vath, and today Micha Klang runs his label ‘Paso Music’ with Spallek, Sebrok, and Marc Miroir. This year Micha lauched another Label named Glückskind Schallplatten together with Jürgen Kirsch. A label for cool minimal and lovely techno-tunes. The first release by Cologne’s, Gabriel Anada. Future releases by Philadelphia´s Someone Else (incl. Onur Özer Remix, Christian Quast, and Hansen and DJ Daniel from Denmark. Micha will release several EP’s this year on labels like Mule Electronique, Metropol Division, On Records, and on his own label Glückskind Schallplatten. |

![]() POPNONAME - LIVE PA COLOGNE / GERMANY [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] / KOMPAKT / FIRM / ITALIC POPNONAME is actually the "Jack Kerouac" of Cologne Techno, and he is a real sensation. The whispering after his spectacular gigs between Cologne and Copenhagen have become increasingly louder: this is great, zeitgeisty liveperformance "on the road"! ![]() THOMAS THE OBSCURE - LIVE PA PHILADELPHIA / PENNSYLVANIA [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] / rizumu / Stripped-down funk and rhythm, always unpredictable. Choosing from a wide arragement of sounds, Tom Schreiber, aka Tom++, brings a clever warmth and emotion to the moment, while revealing an insightful view of the reality we inhabit. ![]() CHARLES COHEN - BUCHLA MUSIC EASEL PHILADELPHIA / PENNSYLVANIA [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] With few recorded/commercially available works to his credit, Cohen prefers to concentrate on creating Electronic Music in the setting of the live performance space. His music ranges from completely abstract and challanging to pleasantly rhythmic and infectious. Each performance is original and new, to the audience and to Cohen as well. |
