Scape, Karloff, Proptronix, Background - berlin, germany and Montreal

Classifying the unusual character of Daniel Gardner is a challenge. All of his school-teachers tried but failed, finally attributing his unconventional ways to a learning disability and decidedly closing the case on him completely.

Born and raised on a farm in the suburbs of Vancouver, Grades were always mediocre at best for young Daniel, until one semester a mysterious new course emerged into the curriculum; Electronic Music Composition. Suddenly discovered, were honor roll grades, and a means to merge an imaginative young mind with over a decade of fiercely enforced classical piano training.

In 1996, captivated by the unified dance floors and Detroit sounds, the 16-year-old embarked on a life-long love-affair with the loop and took his first DJ residency at a Vancouver afterhours. After two successfully directionless years studying electronics and design, and after dabbling with some independent releases, Daniel decided to put his pride aside and demo his accomplishments. A CD of incomplete works were sent out as an experiment to 5 of the most esthetically innovative labels in Germany, and received back were 3 requests to release it. The encouragement and new-found confidence led to the birth of the project FRIVOLOUS.

Now with more than 40 releases and over a dozen 12"s to his name, Frivolous has toured the globe playing an eclectic array of venues and festivals along the way. His live shows have been hailed for their energy, originality and ingenuity as he's taken the stage next to some of the most respected names in the business. Never compromising the art of showman-ship, these spectacles feature live keyboards and vocals as well as the incorporation of his DIY aesthetic. Integrating homemade devices such as the "Frivolous Patented Electromagnetic knife", the "Broken-Ruler Music Box" and the Double "Cable-Tub" Bass, his sets are injected with a sense of fantasy, imagination and personality scarcely found elsewhere in modern electronic dance music.

Thoughtless / Fukhouse - Toronto

Producing dance music and performing live for over eight years, Noah Pred emerged from Vancouver's underground as a sought-after techno DJ with a sophisticated sound and unique style. Devoted to authentic and soulful strains of techno in all its permutations, Noah's sound continues to evolve while remaining firmly driven by the dancefloor.

Since his first records came out in the late nineties, his productions have received international support, appearing on charts from renowned talent such as Carl Cox, Cari Lekebusch, and Laurent Garnier. His subsequent 12-inch EPs and remixes have continued to garner critical acclaim while moving dancefloors across the globe, appearing on playlists from Tokyo to Glasgow.

As a DJ and live act, Noah has travelled throughout Europe and North America, performing alongside such diverse artists as Funk D'Void, James Holden and Mathew Jonson. After working as assistant A&R for Consigned Recordings in Montreal, Noah applied his label skills by spearheading the Pacific Technics project, a triple-vinyl compilation benefiting Amnesty International. The Pacific Technics CD, selected and mixed by Noah Pred, was released in June 2004.

Exploring his compositional versatility, Pred launched the Shen project later that year. Geared towards digital downtempo, electronic dub and emotive IDM, Shen has provided Noah with a creative outlet for productions that roam beyond the borders of clubland. His debut Shen full-length, 'Outlines', was released on Native State Records in December 2006.

Recently relocated to Toronto where he's accepted a DJ residency with the Fukhouse crew, he runs two record labels from his studio headquarters - Thoughtless Music and Sentient Sound. Delving into the potentials of field recording and integrated sound design, Noah's latest techno full-length on New Kanada, Ecocosm, was released in August 2007.

ERIC DOWNER
Sensor / Fukhouse - Toronto

Growing up in the sleeper town of Cambridge, Ontario, Eric Downer was introduced to electronic music at a young age by his uncle. Early sonic excursions were comprised of mix edits on his dad's dual cassette and CD hi-fi, focusing on tiny bits of sound using a combo pause button/jog wheel stutter approach. Access to late night radio and a few well stocked record stores saw that he was collecting music as soon as his first paycheck was in hand.

Moving to London, Ontario, Eric found work in a record shop being paid exclusively in vinyl. It was here that his career as a DJ really began to take shape. London, at the time, was booming with the right mix of people (Caulfield, Guthrie, Repair- to name a few). Gigs with peers and well-known headliners both from the vicinity and abroad took place in a variety of locations from galleries to people's basements. The influence of his peers at the time buttressed his creative inspiration and ensured forward momentum.

The mid 1990's saw Downer make the move to Toronto and partake in large-scale underground events hosted by Transcendance and Alien Visitation, Ritual & Industry Nightclub among others. This opened him up to many venues across the whole of the city from gritty, decrepit slaughterhouses, to derelict warehouses, out to the forests and beaches, onto tall ships and back to the seedy nightclubs and more intimate nightspots. Gigging alongside many of the peers he met in London, he was also billed with many other luminaries of the techno, ambient and house spheres while holding down various residencies and hosting his own events. This exposure at home saw interest generated in other cities (being a dual citizen helped), bringing Eric to Halifax, Cincinnati, Detroit and points in-between, eventually culminating in his first trans-Canadian tour in 2005.

Eric, working by day as an audio technician in television and film, maintains his role in Toronto's underground, collaborating with Fukhouse as a resident DJ and developing his events promotion company, Sensor. Inspired by new technologies and sounds, mixed with a blend of his past influences, Downer creates an energetic and sublime dance floor experience. This year sees Eric releasing his long awaited studio work into the wild on the new Canadian imprint, Thoughtless Music.
