Upfront, Steez Promo and M3 present: VIRAM - WASH, D.C. Celebrating 5 Years of Drum & Bass @ FIVE ![]() ![]() ANDY C & MC GQ [ Ram Records ] - UK **WORLD'S #1 DNB DJ** The man mysteriously known to most as Andy C. undoubtedly is one of the most important figures in drum'n'bass' evolution. He was there at the dawn of the '90s when drum'n'bass was still hardcore techno, honing his talents as a DJ. Then, in 1992, just as drum'n'bass was beginning to blossom, he formed Ram Records with Ant Miles. The label quickly became one of drum'n'bass' driving forces, releasing a plethora of 12" EPs featuring many of the genre's leading producers. As part of the duo Origin Unknown with Miles, Andy C. produced one of Ram's many landmark tracks, "Valley of the Shadows." Released in 1993, the track quickly became not only an anthem but also a classic, being remixed and re-released repeatedly. Later in the '90s came more Origin Unknown tracks; in addition, Andy C. joined forces with Shimon and Miles to form the much-celebrated supergroup Ram Trilogy. Throughout all his success, the man known to only a select few as Andy Clarke managed to remain for the most part anonymous and, as a result, considerably mythical -- an iconic figure within the insular and manic U.K. drum'n'bass scene -- known to even his fans as only Andy C. ![]() ![]() ED RUSH & OPTICAL [ Virus ] - UK **FIVE DEBUT** Ed Rush & Optical (aka Ben Settle and Matt Quinn) contributed severely to the evolution of drum & bass long before their studio partnership was born. After releasing several quality 12's the duo created what is still considered to be one of the most important drum & bass albums ever – 'Wormhole'. This claustrophobic, funk-fuelled collection still sounds as fresh today as it was then, with notable classics such as 'Compound' and 'Point Blank' setting the standard that many are still trying unsuccessfully to duplicate today. Skip to 2001 and the second Ed Rush & Optical album, 'The Creeps' takes the duo to new production heights. For the first time they collaborate with vocalists, most notably MC Rhymetyme on the stunning 'Resurrection'. The biggest tune from the album was the heavyweight 'Pacman', with its Ram Trilogy remix giving the Virus imprint its first national chart placing. The album was swiftly followed by the massive 12 'Kerbcrawler' that borrowed loosely from a house tune but was rinsed by drum & bass DJs everywhere. 2003 saw the third long-player appear from the duo. 'The Original Doctor Shade', in their own words was more like Wormhole and was more fun to make. MC Rymetyme returned to the fold on the bleep 'n' bass of 'Why' alongside MC Darrison, plus there was a tidy collaboration with hip-hops finest – the Scratch Perverts. The most interesting addition to the tracklisting was 'Smarty Pants', an energetic slice of house music that found its way into the record box of Seb Fontaine amongst others. With the duo rumoured to be sitting on more than 100 non-dnb tracks you don’t have to be a genius to work out the one they chose for the album is something special. Today their DJing commitments span the four corners of the globe and we can expect much ground-breaking material to come from the Virus Recordings camp. SUB FOCUS [ Ram Records ] - UK With several tracks to his name all made in the space of the last twelve months 2004 has been a massive year for Nick aka Sub Focus: the year has seen him breakthrough in unprecedented fashion armed with the likes of the technically astounding "Acid Test", the simple yet devastatingly effective "Strobe", the lively "Get on Up" and the altoghether awesome "X-Ray". In a matter of months, he has gone from being one of many wannabe producers to become a permanent fixture of the award winning Ram Records family. Artists like Sub Focus are what "Best Breakthrough Producer" awards are made for. RED ONE [ Ram Records ] - UK Scott Bourne aka Red One is a multi-talented major player… His labels; Ram, Liftin’ Spirits, Frequency and Ratio are all much respected, and Ram now approaching its 15th year still remains in a league of its own when it comes to supplying the dance floor. His own tunes; have always been a case of quality rather than quantity, purely because there aren’t enough hours in the day. Moving onto Red One the DJ; wicked DJ, always brings the vibes, never better showcased than at his very own legendary club night Ram @ The End which is nothing short of a drum and bass institution that helps push the scene forward.
