they have the plain sight rule, which means if they can smell it, hear it, and/or, of course, see it, then they can search your car further,they are allowed to pat you down for weapons, but not use it as grounds for a further search, such as for narcotics, even if they feel something that may allert them, and when you go to get your proof of insurance or registration, if you keep it in the glove compartment, they can take a peek, if you giv them the opportunity a good thing to do is carry a tape recorder in your glove box so in an encounter you can slyly vocalize what the police officer is doing, mainly by asking him why he is doing certain things, and also clearly state that you do not consent to any searches, if your unsure always ask if an officer is giving you an order or a request and if things get stagnant and you dont even know why the officer has you there ask if he is detaining you or if you are free t leave, and ask him to tell you when you are free to go, i guarentee if the officer plans on doing something whack, this will keep him in check, but then again they can always sight suspicious smell, thats why when they approach your car only lower the window enough to do your business unles they order you to lower it all the way, and when you step out close your window and car, and lock your door, having an open door does not give them the right to search your car without consent or probable cause but it will give you the opportunity to clearly state that you do not consent to any searches instead of them diving in and finding grounds to further search if you do all these things, even if they do end up searching you and finding shit all this will probably help your court case, oh also, tell the other people in the car to chill the fuck out, cause i only get in trouble when im with other people cause they dont know how to act

oh yeah, irvine cops are assholes with nothing better to do than bust people for minor offenses and scare the kiddies, newport cops are a little more chill but still pretty dick, and hb cops have bigger things to worry about then seatbelts or minor drug charges, unless they are motorcycle cops, those fuckers are the universal assholes of the universe
