This member is the original thread starter. chillout I had a conversation with the Oxygen Bar guy at Squeezed....

He had never been to a rave before and was thoroughly curious in what it was like..what really goes down..if its what its made out to be, blah blah blah.

So explained it to him in a simple way(theres a point behind all of this):
Quote:
Started out with drugs, a place to escape, feel free, not be judged, a big fuck you to society and the system, and music...those are the core of it all and the most important.

The music featured is Electronic Dance Music, which features about 5 or 6 main genres that break down into over 30 sub-genres.
The forms of music change from crew to crew depending on what styles they prefer and what they think will draw a crowd.

The types of parties break down into two main types....Permitted/heavily flyered/large venue and capacity and non permitted/lightly fliered/mainly internet promoted/less budget/less stages and DJs/less people.

Those break down even further to
the different scenes: Renegades/Burner undergrounds/boat parties/Psy parties/Desert parties/Undergrounds/Mini-massives/Massives/Festivals. might have missed something in there but whatev.

There are local DJs and international DJs....booked depending on size/budget of party.

The way people dress and act and the music they like also somehow puts them into different categories....instead of just all being ravers, unified by a pluralist setting and brought together by the same interest, a lot of us judge people almost too instantly and we bitch a gripe about (insert type of partier).

Crews battle. Have you ever heard of one club getting mad at another for running on the same night? has Avalon ever tried getting Vanguard shut down?

they talk shit on one another, sometimes ruin fliers, talk bad on their party, make it a war, and compete in a way that makes it sorta more about who has the most flawless party, best production, and more heads instead of throwing the party they love.

Now of course...thats a very negative outlook. there are good crews and bad crews...crews that throw the parties they love...crews that don't mind if they don't make a ton, they stay out of argument with others....groups of friends that just put shit together not like a business.....but this just shows an encapsulating part of the rave scene.

Its a love/hate relationship with a lot of ravers. We hate the very people that make up our scene and fight with business partners that keep it alive in between our parties.

go back to the beginning. Its just music and drugs and an escape. We're supposed to be fighting the system, but instead we're fighting one another. sounds fuckin foolish and dumb right?

Him: yeah...thats pretty stupid.
Me: yup...ravers are pretty stupid....myself included.....its just drugs and music and then crews put some more shit added.

I guess its part of why we love it....cause we make it so much more and need something to trouble our brains with. We create our own drama and bullshit. whatever.

So how much money have you gotten for the oxygen?

Him: 300 or so dollars.

Me: damn...thats nothing. Tim lost money on that shit. gotta tell Winter to definitely not get this.

seriously.

why the fuck do we make so much shit out of so little?

P.S. if only i could type the conversation i had with the attendant in the upstairs bathroom while peaking on my two hits......

I won't get into your description as my GF says I try to start too many debates and arguments...I'll just say what you described is not EXACTLY how I would describe it, but I won't step on that issue.

No one can give a truly unbiased yet accurate description of the rave scene. If you ask a brand new person to the scene and a 5 year veteran how they would describe the rave scene, you would get two completely different answers.

Here's some food for thought tho - How is the "rave" scene different than the all the kids that attend every show of different music genre's? I talked with a friend a while back, and the question came up of "What makes a 'rave' different from any other music concert?". We both agreed that there isn't really a whole lot of difference.

With that in mind, do we as a whole put our scene on a bit too high of a pedestal? What's to say you couldn't find super plurry people at a system of a down concert? What's to say you couldn't hang out and toke with chill people at a Tech N9ne concert?

Yes there are aspects of the rave scene that make it somewhat better than other scenes, but do we maybe build up this image in our heads that our scene is way better, and this then somewhat alters our view of our own scene?

Food for thought.

^oh i definitely agree; ravers(including me) think too highly of their scene most of the times and overlook the negatives of our parties and possibilities that people at other music shows are just as friendly. and that....people in general all over the world outside raves are really friendly.

I would say the biggest difference between raves and concerts, other than the music style and fashion, is that we have so many different scenes within the larger "rave"

i dont know too much about the punk scene....but do they have the same sort of category break down that we have with kandi kids, junglists, burners, jaded, Ptot, etc.?

my main point also seems to be a big difference too....i can't imagine that people who go to concerts complain about the other people there and then go home and critique the concert indefinitely quite like ravers do. or at least forum ravers who analyze and grade everything....

but maybe im wrong? i duhno.

read my explanation....its a very simple one and probably only gets biased like 2/3rds in.

Oh there's definitely categorization of Punks as wide and varied as there is Ravers. I imagine it's true with most scenes throughout history and the world. The differences are that 1) the groupings of Punks aren't nearly as large, so you don't see all styles represented at the same time and 2) you're not a Punk. Before raving, I had no idea there were so many types of ravers.

I was/am a Punk head and have been for over a decade. I've been to more Punk shows than I can count. The community is older, more firmly rooted, and much more diverse than you can imagine.

And to whoever said we think too much of our scene, I say you think too little of it.

Most of my searching has just shown me where to rent them from.
I kinda wanna call someone up and be like 'Can I just use it at your place for a little bit?" hahahaha.
I think last time I searched I found a sushi place in San Francisco that had one.

type "punk rock" into wikipedia. it'll give you a small fraction of the diversity. theres probably more sub types of "punk" than there are "raver".
