I got there at 3 AM after Infocus and it was still pretty sick. They turned the 3D Water/Mist light display back on. Incredible.

The music stopped at 2 AM, which is gay, BUT they had all kinds of musicians and drum circles all up and down the beach which were pretty quality. There were literally like hmmm i'd say 12,000 people up and down the beach in a half-mile stretch, which = A SHIT LOAD but not enough to make it too crowded. The art/technology was absolutely incredible. They had these robotic-like "air balloon" creatures that self-inflated and deflated at intervals which were made with computer parts, LCD screens (with visuals), and a bunch of fans. It was way better than it probably sounds in words. I was impressed as hell. And there was this HUGE 3D-Water/Mist projection "sphere" where they formed details and shadows "inside" of the mist by using advanced laser refraction methods. It was basically like Milkdrop being inserted into a 3D environment and stretched for 100+ feet across the sand. Ive never even IMAGINED anything like that in my craziest thoughts. It was so epic its not even realistic to me. Holy shit I wish I would have been on acid for that one. It will be better next year because 1) Im almost positive their music permits will extend to 4 or even 6 AM. 2) the technology will be even huger, and 3) building off what they already have laid down for us can't lead it backwards in any way |

For me, it was totally worth it. I live 45 minutes away and this event is free with a wonderful historical venue. I was only there from 8pm to 12:30 am as mentioned and from that timeframe it was a really worthewhile time. The fellow techheads/ravers/partiers were all really friendly and into having a good time; like i said, the very first raver I said hi to ended up hanging out with me for a couple of hours off and on and everyone else was throwing off some good vibes. There were a lot of tourist and people that were expecting a venice like atmosphere which was a real bother since they took up a lot of space and just gawked at whoever was being an individual and whatnot but I just ignored them. There were a lot of police, I didn't smell that much weed or see many people tripping but this was more of a family atmosphere so whatever. The music at the beginning was awesome, good bass and entertaining electronica some old school and a little trance from what I heard. The exhibits were awesome and quite abstract and deep as well as the visualizations. If you planned to go with the intentions of getting high and raving out to music you would have had a bad time. If you wanted to go because you had some free time, wanted to see some cool exhibits, dance for a little and just be in santa monica with some people like you, you would have enjoyed it.

ROFL @ Me and my antinewb crew of friends getting up and leaving right when the "other group of ravers with pacifiers in their mouths and smelling like double-stacked drugs" pulled up to our camp.
Some nerdy looking white kid was chewing the shit out of his lower lip, mumbling while looking at me straight in the eyes. I was like "Yep. Time to go guys... time to go." |

I saw that guy at Venice on 4th of July.
It tripped me out so much ... I was about to go to glow, after Infocus. I was basically there ... but due to some random ravers in tinas van, we turned around and went to Fullerton. |

So I was originally looking to go rave this Saturday, trying to go dance somewhere since I haven't really raved since the day party a couple weeks ago. But my choices were limited, either paying up $30+ to go to Awakening/Infocus/HARD or going for free to glow.
I brought my friend along with me and warned her ahead of time that there might not be any dancing music or music at all for that matter. (As I read in a earlier thread) I got there at about 11:30, got a bit unsober and headed for the pier about half mile away. When we climbed onto the pier we were greeted by soft chill reggae, something you can more your body slowly to. Headed up the pier and saw some weird floating plastic icebergs (?) in the ocean glowing different colors. While on the pier I saw one of the "attractions" where they had this giant telescope give you a light show pertaining to your brain waves with this thing on your head. I tried to cut it line with someone I knew but was quickly kicked out by the angry mob of 200 people behind me. Then we headed onto the beach where they had something that looked like a giant moon bounce made out of several white tubes. I tried to jump into it from the side but was once again met by the angry mob of 200 people in line. Oh yea. How about crossing the bridge over PCH? Felt like the 405 of humans. Talk about 3-5 thousand people walking in one direction. Stop and go traffic all the way across. We headed around Broadway and saw people lining up around the old Robertson's May. This time I did not want to face the super-angry mob and just kept walking. The ferris wheel was also amazing. I felt like I should've been tripping watching that. I got a video of it somewhere, I'll upload later. It was completely lit up and doing very crazy animations. All in all, a great free event. I will definitely be more prepared to see things and definitely come later!! Like at about 2-3 AM since this is a 12 hr event. Cliffnotes: Cheap and fun Trippy ferris wheel Angry mobs P.S. See the post icon? Imagine that on a giant ferris wheel. |
