I've been driving the same car for about 5 years and tend to drive with a light-foot and try to get great gas mileage out of it. I thought I had been doing my best in all these years, but no! There's more mileage to be had!
I've always gotten 300 miles on 12.8 gallon tank which is about 24mpg. I've found a new way to effectively get 360 miles on the same tank!!!! (28mpg!) I tried this 3 times and it's consistently gotten 60 miles extra every time which saves me $10/tank! So... here's what i'm doing... When I get on the freeway, I typically drive 65-75mph. Now instead of driving 65-75mph, I'm driving 55-60mph on the freeway. This 10-15mph speed difference is HUUUGEEE for increasing your efficiency. There is significantly less air-resistance that the car needs to battle against, the engine sips the fuel in comparison, and you pollute the air just a tad bit less. Now... I know you're wondering...how do you drive 55-60mph on the freeway without getting honked at or being a total dick in LA??? Turns out, it's very easy. I get on the freeway, drive normally on the 2nd-slowest lane for a minute or two until I find a car or big-rig that's not going faster than 60mph, and just get behind them, switch on the cruise control, and relax!!! That's all there is to it! Just find a slow driver and tag behind them. And don't get anywhere near the faster lanes, you don't want to impede the natural flow of traffic or else LA drivers will go ape-shit. AN AWESOME SIDE EFFECT I've noticed of doing this is... driving becomes soooooo relaxing and easy. I swear it feels like time literally slows down and my mind doesn't get caught up in the hustle & bustle of getting from point A to point B. Honestly, try it for the relaxing-effect it has more than the gas-savings, it's really therapeutic. After a couple times, you'll realize driving is much less tiring! You'll also realize that going that 5-10mph slower doesn't make an important difference in how long your trip takes. SO, you save lots of gas/money, your mind unwinds and driving becomes a relaxing experience. What more do you want? NOTE: DO NOT do this if you're driving home very tired at like 3am, 4am, 5am.. etc. Driving slower-than-you're-used-to when you are very tired/sleepy is a recipe for your mind to completely shut down and for you to fall asleep at the wheel (it's the equivalent of hypnosis because of how easily your brain goes on autopilot while driving). Also refrain from turning your heater on, that'll also make you fall asleep at the wheel as well. Just things I've noted from driving home at 5am every weekend for the past 5 years, haha. thats the difference between 3rd and fourth gear on a normal car, right?
up-shifting, even on an automatic, uses a ton of gas. |

Antranik!
Your post is so true. I have a shitty little Suzuki Vitara that seems to complain to me every time i go above 75 mph. It's just not a comfortable speed for her. But if I go 60, she finds her comfort zone and can cruise easily. It's like a jogger. There's a certain speed that a jogger will feel completely comfortable running at and can jog at that speed for a very long time. And it's true about it being relaxing. Our lives are so hustle-and-bustle. We must do everything quick and efficiently. It's not often that we have time to just relax and BE. |
