I love electro. True electro that is. I was around when the genre made it's debut in the early 80's. Groups like Information Society, Mantronix, even Afrikka Bambaataa paved the way using new wave sounds with urban dance beats. Bands like Depeche Mode, New Order, and Erasure have been rocking electro/synth tunes for over two decades.
ElectroClash in the late 90's did a really good job emulating that. Then the post generation of emo-pop came about. Which is turning out to be not alot more than digitally sounding synth-pop with a vocodor vocal laced in. But I'm not here to split hairs. Electro is nothing new. Just resurfaced because the music was fun and in the past few years, it seems that EDM was losing it's "fun" feel. It's American culture to have to label EVERYTHING. We've been trained by the corporate legions to equate something without label to not have value. We avoid generic products on the shelves of our favorite grocery store even though the product inside is no different than the one with the colorful label. Music is no different. As an artist, it's hard to market yourself when your sound is not only quite diverse, but spans many different sounds. |
