well...not to rain on everybody's parade but what are we talking about here. are we talking overall, genre specific or who plays the best recs.
for me...it's impossible to place a DJ overall unless he plays multiple styles. one such example would be R.uns A.ll W.arehouses. he plays a few genres & he kills at each of them. besides, you can NEVER logically compare a turntablist to a dance-music DJ. fact is, i have yet to hear a PURE turntablist DJ mix a complete blend over the course of even a 45 minute set. it just doesn't happen. conversely, you don't hear any exceptional dance-music DJ's tear it up turntablist stylee...at least not championship calibur. so in the spirit of respect i will vote this way. (bear in mind...LA & LA transplants ONLY & only Dj's still playing out) Trance (+all sub-genres) = tie for me between Thee-O & CL. ^^production = Quadra House/Elektro/Ol' Skool (+all sub-genres) = Dj Dan...never been close for me, his trance leaves me wanting more though (not in the best way) ^^production = probably don't know enough to make an intelligent decision on this one. DnB/Breakbeat/Trip-hop (+all sub-genres) = 1a) R.A.W. - 1b) Origin ^^production = Origin Hardcore Techno (+all sub-genres) = since i feel it's not in the spirit of the vote, as well as disrespectful to toot your own horn...R.A.W. & Inyoung. different skill levels for 2 entirely different styles of mixing. i've heard R.A.W. do some sick sh** with Hardcore before. ^^production = Omar Santana (NY transplant) honorable mention, J-Funk (though i'm not sure if he still plays out out here) & hip-hop i'd have to say Yoshi & Cut Chemist. basically, to me anyways, a turntablist is more of a percussionist. they focus on beats & rhythm...they're more like vinyl drummers in a roundabout sense. however, a dance-music Dj is more like a composer, working to blend all parts together into a seamless journey complete with a beginning, middle & end. like a musical storybook designed to keep you both interested & active at the same time, all throughout. anyways. just my 2 cents |
