Ok, I have been told that Psytrance is still considered rave music, especially the good dark stuff, but the promoters here dont consider their Psytrance parties raves, they say its more like a gathering/spiritual/ritual concept, which after attending these events, I can somewhat see the more "structure" they talk about it, like from 10:00pm-8:00am, its just non-stop dark tribal beats whereas a rave usually changes from genre to genre. I dunno...someone enlighten me please!!

Well from the few psytrance parties Ive been to, its usually a smaller number of people and a more laid back atmosphere. So I would call it a gathering with badass music. As far as it being a spiritual experience, well thats all on a personal level so it could be for some people. If you want a taste of the music, you should really check out my mix *shameless plug*. Crank up the volume and see if its the type of music you could rave to.

Lastly, Id just leave you with this suggestion: Dig deeper into the psytrance scene. Ill garuntee youll find out its miles away from trance and encompasses so many different styles that it blows away any other genre in terms of artistry and variety.

In recent years, psytrance has becoming more and more popular in the United States. Much of what you hear at raves is what is called full-on psytrance. It's a bit more bouncy and has a little more dancefloor appeal. Dark Psy is a bit more aggressive reverting to harder beats and more less blips and acid squelches. Personally, I don't care for splitting hairs with psytrance because, to be honest, the music is far too complex to narrow down into one "genre" or "subgenre".

It's likely though that you noticed a completely different vibe at true psytrance parties. It is indeed a different place that many elitists hold true to. As a rave convert to psytrance, I used get dirty looks and almost felt unwelcome in psytrance communities. True psytrancers are protective of what they have and with good reason.

Most psytrancers are crossovers from the rave scene. The rave scene has become a commodity. Raves are thrown in stadiums and megaclubs to 1000's of people whom many have a limited understanding of the music at all. Rave culture as a whole has become a consumer product. It has been labeled, packaged, and conveniently sold at retail price to those whom want it.

Spiritual or not, most psytrancers don't want this to happen to thier music, scene, or culture. They want it to remain pure. They want it to remain pure. They want each trip to be as good the last time as the first. This goes back to the days of punk rock and rebel rock parties (where Goa Trance has it's roots). It was about the experience of the party not the party itself. It was about tapping into the Temporary Autonomous Zones of one's mind and not about getting fucked up and dancing all night.

Anyway, this post has gone on long enough. Hope it was some help to you. If not, feel free to ask me whatever. I've worn many hats in my time, including that of raver. And I'm a trancer 'til the end.

Namaste-

psytrance is definately more spiritual. the music itself and the whole environment is geared to move you into an altered or meditative state (without drugs). i think that raves are fun, but keep my raves and my all night trances seperate. when i want to party, ill party. when i want to transcend within using music and dance, thats when i turn to psytrance. twisted i agree with everything you said. big BOOOM to twisted.

Nice thread

6362MetaForce is dedicated to promoting the roots of the psy scene alongside killer new experiences - and for that reason we gather all seekers from the rave and club scenes while we strive to keep the trance experience pure in our parties in NYC and in India....

We definitely believe in the spiritual roots of the trance scene - these are historically undeniable and provide a beautiful base to build upon. But we also believe this music & these parties have the potential to release and transform many different kinds of people's minds in whatever ways suits them best ...!!

psytrance parties are the desert raves of a decade ago. Psytrance parties are what the rave scene used to be before it got super mainstream, in my opinion. Hopefully this time around we won't have reporters trying to do "shock" stories, lawmakers and greedy promoters that care about $$ more than the scene fucking things up.

We won't get that lucky.. but dreaming is free, right?

parties Re: Psytrance...rave music?

Psytrance is still popular I think only in Israel. I still regret not going there in '04 when they still had the Love Parade in Tel Aviv. It was postponed twice, then when they finally had it in October, I couldn't go because I had a math test that I couldn't miss. I ended up doing really poorly anyway, so it wouldn't have made a difference if I did go to Tel Aviv. I'm still kicking myself in the ar$e for that.

Hey,

I just came to America and am in Atlanta. Ive been browsing these forums for a few days now and have made the following observations.

1. Techno, drum and base, hard house... etc etc parties that go on all night here are being called raves... This is new.

2. I read some where someone who listened to psy trance called himself a raver and people responded with confusion. Then someone corrected him saying that he wasn't a raver but a trancer or some shit like that donno.

Anyway, I come from India and have been listening to psy since i was a kid and have been to many parties so here is what I have to say.

Psytrance as a genre has grown to become huge, and it is difficult sometimes differentiate due to fuzzy boundaries between different genres. Yet and a big YET, when I listen to a psy trance track I know its a psy trance track, simple as that.

Now as far as what a rave is... back home when I went to parties in goa ( and I've been to many, many many ) on the famous beaches of anjuna, vagator in places like hilltop, bamboo forrest, dolce vita etc we used the term 'party' and 'rave' synonymously. So I find it messed up that people here think to the contrary that other forms of music constitute a rave ( its almost derogatory). finally, in the city it is usually hard to have raves outside in the open, but I would not consider a psytrance event in a club to be a rave. So to me a rave is out in the open.

Now a rave ( my type of party ) is all about peace, freedom, acceptance unity and what not... there is no judgement. It is not about drugs etc though I have taken them at parties and I know what people mean when they talk about spirituality etc. Again, if it is about spirituality to some so be it Accepted!!

About the music at parties. I have been to festivals ( raves that last for 2 or more days ) and afternoon to evening parties, sunrise parties, sunset parties and the usual run of the mill evening to morning parties. And let me describe the music at the run of the mill evening to mornng parties. the party will start ( and again this is almost always the scene in outdoor raves, at clubs usually its just full on all night long, no transitions ).

So we start our journy with chillout around ten at night. Now chill out doesnt mean its slow... we're still sending at 140+ bpm. but the mood of the music is peaceful relaxing, not overwhelming, just tap your feet, take in the atmosphere, find your spot etc etc.

We then slowly transition to Full on full power music ( full on full power ... key terms here and coloqial in rave lingo ). you cant stop your legs from moving, hell you want to jump around, run , sit stand fly everything at the same time. the music is uplifting, full of sounds that throw you left right. This lasts till about 2am. ( depending on the mood of the party the dj etc )

Then past 2 we are getting into the dark of the night. the beat is persistent and there is no escaping the dark, spooky, eary sounds. The music is deep, tense, almost scary. It wont release you even if you want out. Yet, it captivates you, opens you up.

Just when you are about to give up and die, with the first rays of the sun as the morning greets the universe you've been in for a while and realise where you've been all night as faces become real, the dj plays the first morning track and it is happy happy music full of melodies that make you smell the flowers. you just wanna sway your head feel on the sun the morning dew and be swept away in the melodies behind/in front of the music thats been at 145+ bpm all night. this goes on from sunlight till 8-9 when the party ends.

After regurgitating all this, man I wish i was at a party. Also for a crash course, pretty much everything on IsraTrance.com is psytrance.

Hope this helps. Boom Shankar.
