I have a question...I have asked this on other boards before but I wanted to know what ravelinkers think. If you had your choice...what would you prefer:
1) For a DJ to play your favorite songs. To play all the stuff you know. To play stuff you can sing the words to. All the anthems. All The Hits. All the Time! 2) For a DJ to try new things all the time. To take chances musically. To change it up. To play House one set and Trance the next. To not be labeled. To try to keep things new and fresh and play out stuff you are not likely to know just yet. 3) Somewhere in the middle. To play new music and promote new sounds but to drop a oldie and goodie from time to time. See I realize I play in LA a lot. I try to keep things fresh for both myself and for you guys by trying new things and switching things up but at the same time giving something familiar. I want to know what you expect from the DJ's in the scene and what you would like. The last thing I would ever want is the scene that I love to grow tired of me or my sound so I feel I have to change it up to keep things interesting and also I hate staying the same for to long...because to me the best artists out there change constantly. I would like to be genreless DJ...I am not a trance DJ...I am not a house DJ...I am just a DJ that likes to play what I like and hopefully other people like it too. I get tired when I hear the same DJ's play the same shit everytime I hear them..so I don't want to do that either...what do you want though? What you expect and what do you prefer. Let me know ![]() |

I'm going to go with option 3.
I like to hear new stuff, but at the same time... a litte bit of the stuff i can sing too is awesome. -Vision |

you've gotta keep promoting the new tracks. because that way people will keep making new music. and if you keep playing new music, you know the same songs won't stay in the rotation. but at the same time it's always nice to hear something great and familiar. i'd say play more new stuff than old though. like spin a majority of new stuff, but just randomly throughout the night, throw on a classic that you love and you think all the kids would love. i know you've got some good ears and hands, so i'm pretty sure you can take whatever you want from this short paragraph and see how it works to your advantage. keep spinning man, we ya |

As a DJ I Believe you Have to Play things That people havent heard or maybe arent into yet, Thats one of the best things about being a DJ, you get to interpret what you think they want to hear and play it for them, show them new things, introduce new sounds, never be the same....Yet sometimes play those tracks that everyone knows....As a way to lure them into something that they just might like. Its all about entertaining them...taking them on a musical journey, and picking a particular genre limits where you can take people.
I think Genres and being Labeled as a particular style limits you as a DJ. DJ's should be just that DJ's who Play Music. Each set should be different because each crowd is different, Each Venue will be unique to that night, and Each time slot will denote certain types of music. On top of the other DJ's that are playing that night....what are they playing, and what are you going to do to affect the way the night has been built, musically. Anyways those are a few of my thoughts as a DJ DJ Wires |

i like djs to have a genre, or at the very least, when they are playing out it should say what genre they're going to spin or at least a close approximation to it
if i'm in the mood for house, i like to pickout something where i know it's going to be house, if colette is on the flyer or the body rock djs, i'm pretty much assured that i'll be hearing house whereas, sometimes mark farina is on the lineup, i get there, and i'm expecting house...but, DOH! he starts spinning that mushroom jazz stuff instead =\ that stuff is fine and good, but not if i'm in the mood to dance to house! i don't appreciate it if he's spinning in the house room and i'm expecting dope bangin' funky house, then i hear his mushroom jazz stuff so i suppose i like a bit of predictability, but it's nice for a dj to toss in new stuff that fits in the genre as well and yes, i'm very glad you don't spin that set that you used to spin with better off alone and the launch and such, hehe...sorry theeo, but back then it sounded like the same set over and over again and you'd be at pretty much every party i'd end up at so i used to get sad when you'd go up onto the decks...i love that you changed it up man |

The reason I started recording most of my sets was really so that it would keep me on my toes. I mean if I am constantly recording and posting mixes...I can't play the same shit all the time...so it helps with me switching things up...but everyone loves "Buy This Record"!! so I seem to play that alot.
