E machines have been notorious for having motherboard problems. Sounds exactly like what my friend Daniel went through. Get a new motherboard. Preferably not the same one that's in the machine, you'll probably need a new CPU too (not worth finding out if the motherboard did something to your chip and then you'll not only have to buy a new motherboard again, but a new CPU).
Personally if you can afford it, get a dell dude. See if your mom will front you, and you make the payments each month if you don't have any credit, or bad credit, etc. If you're going laptop, get Alienware, they're the best. Not the cheapest tho. They got true P4's! Not some scaled down Celeron or "M" processor (which is good, but only for basic stuff. Dell's are good if you need Microsoft Office and wirless networking, plus maybe to get your email and chat online. I wouldn't use them for highend applications and games, then for sure get Alienware if you want the best! |

the most likely cause would be a motherboard failure, as dr. e vil has stated, something that commonly goes wrong is, over time the capacitors on the motherboard die...you can easily check this, open the computer and look on the motherboard, it's the main board that everything plugs into inside the computer, you're looking for some small cylinder shaped objects, look at all of them, see if there is any stuff coming out of the bottom or top of any of them, if you're totally rads with a soldering iron you could replace any bad ones, but most people will just get a new motherboard.....if this is the case, it is rare that your cpu, memory, or any other components died with the motherboard, so try to find the same model of motherboard or something close, you will need to reinstall windows if you can't find the same motherboard
i wouldn't advise an alienware laptop, unless maybe you're a hardcore gamer, which i don't think you are, plus the cases are very ugly =) a cheap dell should do everything you need, get a minimum of 512 mb. of ram, more is better, make sure you don't get a celeron processor |

the problem can also be the memory dying on you too....
since the "E Machine" logo is probably hiding the bootloader/BIOS information, you might not be sure where the error is occuring. most likely it's the motherboard, but I would venture out and say there's a possibility it's the RAM/memory too..... There might be a key command you can use to let the bootloader/BIOS reveal what is going on during the boot process .... I'm not sure of the key command for thata computer, but try pushing all of the F-keys and see if one of them will reveal what is going on .... that way, you can see where the error occurs in the boot process, which will make diagnosing the problem much easier and specific hope that helpsI'll also agree with Nate that Alienware computers in general are ugly as sin. I would even extend that to Dell's also ![]() If aesthetics is a primary concern, I would venture for either an Apple (particularly since it can run Windows natively now) or Sony. The rest are ugly. :P |

e machine's is the cheapest computer out there., and its garbage, just throw it away, and go get a custom built computer.

try reinstalling windows. when you got the computer did it come with a restoration cd? if it did try it and it'll reinstall all your drivers and software. and my advice, stay far far away from anything that is store bought computers. your better off (if you dont know computers) with a dell. i build my own personally, much better reliablity. -echo- |

if you NEED data from that computer, please do NOT reinstall windows on it, unless you know what you're doing that is...
also, please do NOT go with a "custom built" computer, get a computer with a decent warranty instead |

here is what you do... unplug it... let it cool off for a little... put it in your car and drive to an overpass... throw it over the overpass and run
