there's plenty of underground parties still, i was at one last night...
from my perspective, things haven't gone that much more commercial than when i got into the scene, i remember seeing 3 day cruise ship raves sponsored by joe camel in 1996, so nowadays i'm really not surprised by any commercialism, the underground still keeps on keepin' on though =) |

No matter where you go, what subculture you're in, you're gonna find commercialism. I used to celebrate my lesbianism by going to the pride parade in Toronto... 'Til I saw an Out Of The Blue van, barely decorated, with the driver in the seat, eyes forward, waving to no one. I had known it was commercial, but that took the cake.
Now I just visit the gaybourhood when I'm there, and hang out. There's fewer posers, fewer onlookers, and it feels more natural. Same thing for the rave scene. Find the smaller parties, the ones hosted for and by real ravers. |
