Full Moon Party Review

So nobody's done this yet...but this party is big, and happens every month. The crowd is as international as they get. I went in January 08, during peak tourist season, so there was a good 30,000+ people there. The party happens on Haad Rin beach on Phangan island, in the Gulf of Thailand.

It is the biggest most intense party you can imagine. No rules or regulations. I saw two Royal Thai Police officers walk through the crowd ONCE all night, and I was there from 10 pm till 6:30 am. There are at least 10 sound systems up and down the beach. The music is really good, especially at the "Drop In Bar" (club/trance and old school) and at "Zoom" and "Tommy Resort" (psytrance). Also some good house music.

The crowd: a mix of really great, fun people, and some really shitty people. An event this size, I'm prepared for some of the creep/rapist type, but not to the degree that it was going on. Ok, I realize this is people from literally everywhere, but where do you fucks come from where it is alright to do that shit??! Just whisk away the girls who are too messed up to say no or even the comatose ones? And I'm happy to prevent a rape, which I'm sure I did a few times, but it shouldn't be up to people like me. Girls, it's up to you. Don't go places like this if you can't take care of yourself.

And the fact that they charge 10 baht (35cents US) to use the bathroom is stupid, because how many people are really going to pay that? (Stay out of the water, it's probably about 50% piss)

Well overall it's a great time, but definitely not the "rave" scene I'm used to, coming from California.

But if you're thinking about going to this party, just make sure you're prepared for one of the craziest most intense nights of your life.

sounds like the scene there is pretty good, except for the rapists going wild and a sea of piss. Im planning to take a trip down there this march, and have been trying to get some dependable feedback on the scene there.
What I have generally heard is that the crowd is OK and the music is nice, but none of the big DJs are there. I mean anyone like Armin, Tiesto, PVD, Marcus Schulz etc, are hardly ever there. What would you say about that ? would appreciate your comments.
what would you say is a decent place to stay over there.

march should be a good time to go. you can't count on big name djs but you never know, i thinkg they've had pretty big names in the past. and the party itself is free (well worth it!) so no worries if you're not familiar with the djs. the music will not disappoint.

as for a place to stay: you have two options. either book a relatively cheap place on the island well in advance, or just find a travel agency or tout when you get there. if you book in advance you will probably be required to book at least 4 nights, but you'll get a better place. and this way you won't have to stay in either of the towns (thong sala or hat rin). i stayed at mai pen rai bungalows on than sadet beach on the east side of the island. i highly recommend it but it is secluded, we had to take a 40 minute boat taxi to the party. if you want to stay somewhere less remote try one of the many places along ban tai beach - i have stayed here before and you can walk all the way to the party along the beach, 15 mins to 1 hour.

im going to koh phengan on the 16th of april finally. thanks for ur advice. I booked myself a room at sunrise resort on haard rin beach. they say it is a 2 minute walk to the beach, and the party happens bang in front of the place. hope the DJs and the music is good. im a bit concerned coz i heard that recently there is a lot of crappy crowd, and rowdyism there. and also a lot of cops in civilian clothes, so not sure what to expect.

Dude can u give me any hints on how the E scene is there? and also how easy of difficult is it to get ur hands on some good stuff there. would be great help man.

the crowd is mixed, you'll find good people there
as for ecstasy: i just drank red bull-whiskey buckets all night. there are cops there, as well as a lot of over the counter shit passing off as x. if you really want some, my recommendation is ask people you meet if they've found any good stuff or wait until other travellers let you know who's holding. be careful! but it's definitely around. the new government has cracked down on drugs recently so it may be expensive.
what country do you come from? Or if you're in the states what state?

p.s. i'm probably going back for the december party with a friend from san francisco!

Was this the only party you went to while you were there? If not, what other parties/clubs would you recommend? My boyfriend and I are going to Thailand in July and I'm sure we'll find something, but any advice would be great. From what I heard, this Full Moon Party used to be amazing but it's gone down hill over the years. Is it worth attending?


And I'm from Orange County, California to get that out of the way.

it is not hard to find a party in that country. bangkok is a sleepless city. you'll almost certainly stay in the naighborhood called banglamphu while there, where there are clubs, but if you want something classer go downtown ("silom" district). phnom penh, cambodia is also a fantastic city. if you go there you must go to the club called heart of darkness. oh and you will probably go to chiang mai while in thailand. i discovered a great house/trance club there called bubble.

yes, i'm sure the full moon party has gone downhill. it's fucking huge. just go without expectations. (yes it is worth attending) i actually met a raver from orange county when i was there. you know an asian guy named phil?
