This member is the original thread starter. muziek why the scene is how it is and how we can change it

I'm about to make a lot of enemies with this, but hey, it's truth. Here are my thoughts on the way the scene is going and what we have to do to change it. I've compiled a list of the things that whether you realize it or not, are negatively affecting the scene. They may be well intentioned, but the laws of cause and effect are what we really have to look at here

1. DJ's with over-inflated ego's who believe the rave is about them
2. People being spectators rather than participators in the rave experience
3. Kandi (here's where i'm making a lot of enemies, but i'll make my case if you can supress your kandi filled brain and continue reading)
4. A lack of creativity and originality and artistry in the creation of a rave
5. The need to appeal to the masses for the pure desire of money (if you are going to do this as a promoter you have no right to call your party a rave)

Let's review, shall we?

1. First of all DJ's seem to hold themselves above the music they're playing, as if they're the center of the rave, not the ravers, or the music, which is destroying the very soul of rave. people tend to face the stage and cheer the dj on, rather than dance and express themselves or interact and enjoy the EXPERIENCE of the rave. THE DJ IS NOT A GOD, AND STOP PRETENDING HE IS.

2 I would say the mass majority of people that come into a rave come in with the mindset of coming to be entertained not to be an entertainer. You ought to come with the mindset of being a contributer to the rave experience and creating your OWN FUN. be an artist, dress up, bring cookies, shit, bring a propane gun and fire that shit off in the middle of the dance floor.

3 Here's the one people will probably hound me on but let me explain. Alright, i get it. it's a nice jester, wait, no it isn't. you spend hours making an armful of kandi and guess what? how much thought did you put into each piece? how original, personal, or thoughtful is that little piece of plastic? kandi is a fad with good intentions that's inspiring conformity over creativity and originality. why don't you try making individual gifts with thought put behind each one and give a few gifts to a few people that really deserve it? rather than whore out your pieces of plastic to "seem" like a generous person. Not to mention the perpetuation of kandi mostly perpetuates a kiddy fashion statement or fad

4 How many raves have you seen that have, oh lets see, a room, a table, some cd'js....maybe a couple posters. There is a clear lack of decorations and mood setting themes. come on! make me think im under water or in a cavern or in a fucking jungle with bat shit insane ape monkeys. There's also a clear lack of costume and roleplay (seriously, people throwing the party ought to be dressed up with an alter-ego to flare in an artistic fashion to the people coming in the door) as well as you could bring in things for people to interact with at the rave. how about a box full of mirrors that people can sit inside? (ok i stole that one from burning man, but still, you get the idea, or maybe interactive lights. a hug booth. maybe you could do some performance art on one side of the room, SERIOUSLY)

5 Please don't try to tell everyone and their mother to come to your rave (or any rave), UNLESS you are willing to seriously tell them what a rave is supposed to be about, and that they know they're supposed to be a contributing member to the rave experience, rather than a spectator to see something that "everyone's doing"

Ok, that's it. You can hate me or love me for it i don't care, but that's my views on why rave's (i should say some because their are some very very few raves that do follow this criteria, but i would say most do)

Go be an artist, dress up, play games, contribute, have fun, and most of all, fuck shit up. scare the crap out of people

later

hahaha this is brutally honest but definately true, dj's like tiesto and oakenfold really have the whole "i'm the shit" attitude going on. and kandi, well, its fun and all the first couple raves you go to... but you know what? Ravers go home and throw that shit in a box where it is never seen again. Seriously, i have like 2 boxes and i'm thinking about donating it to a kindergarden class. Go on, hate me too...

Lets be real though, with 99% of kandi absolutely zero thought went into it. Thats why its a stupid fad. I mean it would be okay if people wore just a little bit, but making an entire culture out of it strikes me as being borderline retarded.

agreed on the lack of thought, but then again its a way to express appreciation for a person greater than a "thanks you're awesome" and less than a sweaty makeout session. and ya it may be retarded, but it gives people something to do that they enjoy much like baseball cards, pong, and any other number of random crap.

I got a piece once that said "i'm the juggernaut bitch" ... and since it made me laugh my ass off the next morning when i was sober , i decided to keep it. Other than that they are all pretty much lame

synthpop Re: why the scene is how it is and how we can change it

you make good points.

however i don't think merely pointing these things out are really going to make anyone have a revelation. kandi isn't going anywhere because it's the only fad that is as widely accepted as it is.

what you NEED to do is start having a select few people (maybe the good people of this thread) start living by this code. and DJs need to start coming up! there has got to be a starting point for the scene. i, too, am sick of the small time DJs acting like people know or care about who they are without having ever been exposed.

but you really overlooked the biggest thing about san diego, it's underground. most people like it either in 21+ clubs or in a warehouse that takes going to 4 locations to find. the only thing "wrong" with the scene here is that it's completely different.

nice post, it needed to be said.

plur exists here, we just need to show it!

Additional things to know when out on the loose---- 1. Knowledge is power in all scenes, so don't be afraid to ask the "old schoolers" questions, no matter how stupid you may think they (the questions, not the "old schoolers") are. 2. The scene is based on the music, not the drugs, if you can't have fun at a party sober then you shouldn't be going at all. 3. If you do choose to do the drugs PLEASE do so responsibly. If you go to the gas station the morning after a party and the clerk can tell that you are on drugs then you have done too much. And never buy from someone you do not know-- if you do then eventually you will get ripped off and/or you may put something into your body that you can't handle. 4. If you choose to do drugs be discrete about it. Drugs ARE illegal! They are what gives the scene a bad name, so be smart about it, it only takes one arrest/OD/blantly obvious drug user to shut down an entire party. 5. VERY IMPORTANT-----Know your promoters. Ask around before attending an event thrown by a promoter that you have never heard of. This could save you a night of stress and $$$$$. 6. Know the music. If you can tell the difference between glass and crank, but don't know the difference between Ambient and Happy Hardcore then maybe you need to re-evaluate your priorities. 7. Practice PLUR......Peace, Love, Unity, Respect. If this is a bit too much for you to do all at once then at least start out with Respect, for EVERYONE. 8. Try to steer away from forming cliques, this isn't high school. 9. Have fun and DANCE, that's what it's all about. It doesn't matter if you can dance or not(Gilligan or Fred Astaire). If you are contributing to the positive energy of the party then that's all that counts. 10. Years from now (or even now) remember what it was like to be a newbie to the scene and treat the newbies you meet the way that you want to be treated now. Educate them; don't look down upon them, they are the only way that the scene will continue to thrive. _
