While there is a solid attempt by some to keep the underground scene alive in SD, you're correct. SD as a whole has become jaded and exclusive to itself. Most parties you find will be at 21+ dive bars catering to the same lineups and people that have been part of their clique for years.
I'm not going to go on a limb and say that one scene is better than the other because they are truly two different scenes. SD justifies it's clique-ishness to being an "intimate" vibe. Which is true. The vibe is alot more intimate and close knit. And by mature, you should imply that it is indeed an older crowd. It's a crowd that has grown from carefree ravers to people with families to care for and mortgages to pay. So making a run on a weekend bender of partying and "consumables" isn't a viable option anymore.
More often than not, I see one of two things happen with party people in SD. They either stay in town and become satisfied with the status quo and do what they do on a recreation basis. Or they move out of town to take it to the next level, but always have a fond heart for the town they once lived.
