I hope everyone is doing well! As many of you may already have heard the City of Edmonton has recently placed some new conditions on our business license. One of those conditions is that the club may not admit anyone after 3 a.m. which as you can guess will eventually lead to the closure of our club. This effort is being driven by the Edmonton Police Service who have a long history of suppressing dance music culture in Edmonton. Remember the “no dancing after 3 a.m.” push in 2001? This is just another version of the same bullshit. Except the strategy this time is to pick off one business at a time until there are no more late night options left for people who just want to dance and listen to their favorite DJs. For the moment this only affects Y Afterhours but it will not stop there.
We sincerely apologize for any disappointment and inconvenience you have experienced coming to Y in the past few weeks. We would like to assure you that we are doing everything in our power to appeal these new conditions. In the meantime we ask for your patience and support . Over the past few weeks many people have asked how they can help. You can….and we do very much need your help. Numbers count. When is the last time anyone got 2000 people out to make their voices heard about something they believed in and cared about? Edmonton’s electronic music community did just that in 2001 with a massive rally on the steps of city hall.
If you would like to help in the effort to save Y Afterhours, our dance music culture, and your right to peacefully gather please join our Facebook group: Keep afterhours alive in edmonton. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] The group is a forum for expressing support and keeping members informed of what is going on. In the very near future we are hoping that you can help us communicate our concerns to the people making the decisions at city hall.
In the meantime we need to build the number of members belonging to the Facebook group. Please forward and share this with any of your friends and contacts locally and around the world who have a connection to Edmonton’s electronic music scene. Thank you to all those of you who have already joined, and especially who have posted and expressed their support. Words cannot express how much your support has meant to me and to the Y Afterhours family.
