Max Mueller Bhavan/Goethe-Institut
presents an evening of electronic music by Lychee Lassi, Germany & Jalebee Cartel, India Saturday, 27 October 2007 7.00 pm entry by passes available 16th October onwards on first-come-first-serve-basis at Programme Department Max Mueller Bhavan/Goethe-Institut 3 Kasturba Gandhi Marg New Delhi ---------------------------------------------------- LYCHEE LASSI Beat (bass) Berger (guitar) Roy (drums) Illvibe (turntables) They found the name - how could it have been anywhere else - in an Indian restaurant. The menu vaunted a whipped-to-a-froth mix of yoghurt, water and an exotic fruit: lychee lassi. So that was the idea from the get-go: a bold blend of dub and funk, hiphop, jazz and soul. "Every concert, is a singular event." So there's generally no point in listening for classic pop patterns, let alone a song format. Each event thrives above all on the ambience, the rhythms, and continual compression and distension. The many different, at times disparate and conflicting influences can be at least partially explained by retracing the band members' past: guitarist Berger has a jazz degree under his belt, did his PhD on Jimi Hendrix, and otherwise works as a producer; drummer Knauf sets the beat for several bands, including the currently red-hot Balkan soul of Miss Platnum; Halberschmidt comes more from rock and world music, is a sound mixer and producer, and composes for dance theatre and film; and Illvibe, who grew up on hiphop, only recently gave up a lucrative job as DJ for Germany's most successful reggae band, Seeed.
