Adelaide has many labels city of churches, city of rhymes, and in the days of yesteryear – city of techno. Gone are those golden days of the Adelaide techno scene – days where Adelaide was a fertile field of musical talent – a breeding ground for creative genius in the universal language of the beat that made the rest of the world stand up and listen.

Whilst it may be true that these days are gone – the Adelaide vibe still remains, buried deep waiting for the opportunity to flourish once more under the bleeps, beeps and tribal rhythms of the dance floor. Just like the music that feeds it, the Adelaide scene has changed. It’s not about trying to reclaim the glory of days gone by – but about moving forward and building a new era of fantastic splendor that will help Adelaide to shine.

Tech-phonics is a series of bi-monthly events that will bring together the artists, friends and people behind the music in an atmosphere of exuberant, hedonistic, sometimes a little debauch, frivolity. Whilst Tech-Phonics is about the sounds of now – it is first and foremost about the party. It is about arses wiggling – not chins stroking. Tech-phonics aims to help Adelaide to reassert its reputation as being at the foreground of musical progression by helping it to see what so many around the world are starting to find out – that in a sea of disposable genres, Techno is the one constant source of a truly vivacious party.

Tech-Phonics is the love child of two of the Adelaide dance music industry’s forward thinking members, Jorge Watts and Lachlan Pender. Since returning to Australia from a six-month stint in Chicago, Jorge Watts, alias Loop Killaz, Tokyo 3 & the Azteckid are fast becoming a name to regularly watch out for. Either Djing in clubs or from recent musical productions on labels such as Global Trax, Subsounds, WET Musik, Hard Hat Recordings, Thrillseekers, Undefined Australia and Vast Recordings have made a loud bang at the forefront of Australian House and Techno music. His releases to date have also appeared in the play lists and charts of DJ's Carl Cox, Slam, Dj Rush, Derrick Carter, Paul Mac (UK), Cristian Varela, Mauro Picotto, Donald Glaude, Dave the Drummer, Inigo Kennedy, Paul Langley, Steve Bicknell, HMC, Dj Lucca and Chicago's .Dotbleep head honcho Justin Long and these are just some who have been favoured to drop his sound. Also renowned around the globe as one half of the dynamic techno duo Loopkillaz that has seen successful productions on U.S. label’s Global Trax and Hard Hat Recordings. He has also been responsible, in conjunction with Paul Glen, for the Adelaide’s last seminal series of Techno events – Wind Up.

Lachlan Pender, first came to the attention of Adelaide promoters for all the wrong reasons. Of all the genres, you could play, who in their right mind would choose to champion the Breaks cause in Adelaide? To his credit, Lachlan stayed true to his passion for the style and vision for its future, quickly becoming one of Adelaide’s leading exponents of tech-funk, combing breaks and house of all variations into one filth coated soundscape. Realising that for breaks to have any chance of establishing itself collaborative efforts between all the like-minded promoters was essential, in 2005 Lachlan was the driving force behind the formation of the Adelaide Breaks Collective (ABC). For the first time the focus was put on an all-out promotional blitz of local talent. The formula was simple. Pessimism was over-ridden by passion and ass-wiggling replaced attitude. Lachlan has also joined his long time partner in trouble, Mal Chia as co-host of the popular radio show on Fresh Fm, Electric Therapy. They use their prime time slot of 8pm to 10pm on Thursday nights to showcase a range of quality underground house and electronica, and it is through this show that his tech-funk sound has been able to continue to evolve - with more of a focus on techno and house, to what it has become today – a fusion of futuristic sounds.

TECH-PHONICS 1.0 comes to the Crown & Sceptre on the 29th of December for a debut shindig this time taking over Crown & Sceptre on a Saturday night. Opening for TECH-PHONICS this month is Adelaide live act AMOEBA and he hits the floor running with another collection of heavy duty tunes, picking up exactly where he left off on this year's awesome Kickin’ Against the Bricks EP. Also with sets from residents Jorge Watts & Lachy Pender are accompanied by special guests Mal Chia & Steve Culgan, coupled with a hedonistic blend of sonic madness found no where else in Adelaide. TECH-PHONICS is here for the holidays & then rolling into summer. Within the stripped down but dimensional outcome there exists a polarity that is neither controlled nor accidental, where life imitates art in between the notes there is TECHNO. $8 general public or 2 4 1 members
