I think all religion is based in ignorance and fear of the unknown. I think it fits in fine, it's not like Christians havn't done their share of hating, killing, etc.

Perhaps Islam is going through it's own turbulent times like Christianity did a few hundred years back.

With the West?

I think you need to do the following if you want a serious answer to your question

1) read about western civilization
2) read the old/new testament and the koran.
3) understand the differences between the two cultures and how each is perceived.

Alot of people that judge islam have no idea what its all about. Just reading one book is not enough.

I would highly consider reading the testaments before reading the Koran. It will give you an idea as to what culture is up to what.

Also, you know what it means to say "Western Civilization?"

The Greeks considered themselves western civilization because as far as they knew(they were on the western edge of known civilization) they were as far west as you could go with civilization before reaching the barbarians and the unknown. So they called themselves a "western civilization". We still use the phrase today but its highly misconscrued(sp?).

So go ahead and read a few books and the new/old testaments and find out for yourself.

It really is interesting stuff

All religions..(almost all) have the Golden Rule at the heart of them.

So there is a common basis and a seed of compatibility with all of them.

Since Islam is going through it's Reformation (kind of), it's going through some turbulent times.

But yeah, most religions can coexist peacefully.

I believe that there is alot of propaganda on each side that tries to make their own views more important and that their views are more right.

I've read the Old and New Testaments(for fun actually ) and I have to tell you that you would be surprised at some of the things there---literally shocked. I've also read the Koran and I was surprised as well.

I would say they are equivalent and realistically I consider the whole world Western. Western Civilization doesn't mean anything to me, every culture has been discovered and we know of most civilizations out there today. It's not like the Greeks that did not know about the Gauls/Celts in their day, we know of the middle east and their situation.

Middle East is also called the Middle East because its in the middle of the far east from England(England called it that because the farthest East is Russia and this area is in the middle).

I'm kinda liberal about the whole thing. I love all cultures equally and I think thats the best thing about this country is that we get all sorts of people here that mix it up and make it exciting!

So much funner with diversity

well radical islam is not compaitable with civilization. i think islam is perfectly compatible. the koran speaks about how no muslim should do harm to another muslim, and does NOT speak of 72 virgins anywehre in it. but yet we see muslims blowing eachother up in hope to get fucked by a teenage girl in the afterlife. most people think that islam is some wacky religion that is based on erradicating non-believers, and that is not true. the EXTREMISTS fuck everythign up for the devout. islam is actually a VERY nice religion as far as its philosophies are concerned. i mean really, is it any crazier than believing god took the form of a human, got nailed to stick, and that explains why people have faults and do bad things? thats just my opinion : ) good question though. thought provoking.

example: buhddism was started in the same 4 years that christ was supposedly "missing" while traveling the east. and if you take ALL the stories, psalms, proverbs, and bullshit and out of the bible, you are left with the basic techigns of christ, which are identical to the teachings of buddah.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking, too.

And yes Kasper, you hit the nail right on the head in regards to radical Islam.

Good posts.

Honestly i do not believe that Islam is going through a reformation at all. If anything it is regressing due to the amount of extremists in the middle east. Any extreme belief is incompatible in society. That being said most of the muslims in the US are anything but extreme therefore perfectly compatible in western society.
