I have decided to go all digital with my DJing this summer. I am planning on buying a Mac Laptop and running Final Scratch and Abelton Live. While I do love vinyl and will always take a little with me technolgy is moving in a way that buying music for DJing is becoming less and less about going to a record store and more and more about going on to download online stores. I mean it makes sense. Digital files are a lot cheaper then vinyl..for what cost me 3 records at a record store I can download a 2 hour set. Now that is progress in my opinion. For me personally, I don't buy records a lot anyway. I belong to the Balance Record Pool and they have provided me with most of my vinyl over the past 8 years. This month, even the pool has decided to go all digital. It saves them a ton of money since they have no shipping costs now. It has also reduced my fee to them by almost half. I myself have my own digital label...so it would make sense if I embrace this new techology full force. So yeah...out with the old into the new. I will always love vinyl but with Final Scratch I will be able to actually play turntables and actually mix so to me the experience is still the same. Also now I will be able to carry around essentially my entire record collection around to all my gigs...and that is fun. I can change shit up all the time...

Before you buy Final Skratch (if you haven't already) check into Ms. Pinky. It is made by a company called Cycling 74 up in the Bay Area and its much more stable than F.S. I personally have never used F.S., but people are always telling me that it crashes all the time and such. I've been using Ms. Pinky for about a year and its fantastic...I don't know about F.S. but with Pinky you can also scratch/mix video...well, basically any type of digital file. I believe that DJ'ing will soon be all digital....but hey, with F.S. and Pinky, at least you still have the feel of the 12".
Anyways, check it out. If you have any questions, just message me. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] |

Are you planning on selling yo vinyls Thee-O? I've been collecting vinyls for home use but I don't like buying them new. Much much cheaper to get them used.

you know, last weekend i downloaded some old dmc videos, one from 1989 that kinda sucked, and one from 1991 that was amazing...i've heard dj craze go off about how awesome final scratch is, but he seems to be the only one that can spin turntablist style that i hear this from
i dunno', the whole thing makes me kinda' sad i love digital, but man i love analog also, i love the noise from a record, even though i never got good at djing i love to go record shopping, i love the feel of a real record under my hand as i'm attempting to beat juggle and transform and such i dunno', it all makes sense, but it makes me kinda' sad at the same time....i guess it's like if bands just stopped using guitars or something...? |

natefrogg, i know exactly what you mean.
it sucks when you no longer have to carry heavy crates of records. when i dj, all i need is two ms. pinky records and thats it! as weird as it may sound, it gets boring when you don't have to turn around, bend over and grab a record to slap on the platter. or put the record away. i highly recommend ms. pinky. |

but thee-o dont leave the vinyl behind. There is something about seeing the DJ throw down the vinyl and beat match and mix, that I never enjoy when the laptop is open and no vinyl is on the table. Add the laptop but still use vinyl.

thee-o i understand your embraceof the digital age man. it is so much easier to get music files, and just use them. who knows maybe one day a long time away i will do the same. for right now though i will stick to vinyl. i love the way the record sounds with the added noise it gives.
