ipod + rockbox is all you need
imo ipods' apple firmware is too dumbed down for anyone who is not a newbie (no file directory structures, can't run your own apps, have to use itunes/equivalent to sync)

Creative Zen Touch. 40GB. Surprisingly easy to fill,but never let me down.
And no need to sign up to any i-tune kinda thing.
