For those wondering where Calgary raves went.
Calgary raves have slowly started dying since 2000 when they put the "Extended Dance Event" bylaw into effect. I remember back in the good ol days before the bylaw, there was an all ages rave pretty much every weekend.
Nowadays, it's illegal to put on an all night dance event, especially if it's all ages and has more than 299 people. The stupidest stipend is that they point out that music that is electronic in nature that plays on without stopping all night is not allowed. There have been smaller events put on, but the city is even cracking down on those now as well.
The only way around it now is just to catch DJ's when they come to the 18+ clubs, or have a really really really underground rave. Even then, I remember my friend putting on a small rave in a "secret" location under an overpass, and even that got shutdown by the police within a matter of hours. You'd have to have it so underground, it would literally have to be in an underground cave or something.
In fact, I think I remember hearing the city updating the bylaw recently nicknaming it "no rave-in hell". Not a very promising name.
So what can ya do? It sucks, and I miss raving a lot. But the kids were asking for it. Raves slowly became a breeding ground for gang related drug dealing and really, raves started going down hill even before the city bylaws when kids started stabbing each other at the events.
