Search the forums a bit...lots of topics on this.
also try going to sites like ************* which has some good tutorials although mostly meant for stringing. or even go to youtube. just practice practice practice and make sure you are going along to the music and doing something besides a figure 8 |

here's the biggest tip for a beginner..
don't worry about your patters so much.. the lights are in your hands and not strings, so there's only so much you can do. focuse the light on the pupuils. try to never disconnect the beam of light from the eyess |

to the show'er....my two cents.
My favorite shows have some figure 8's in them, but they also switch up to other patterns, and I also like it when the people giving the show, alter the angle they are standing in relation to me. Some patterns look entirely different from the side. Work in using your body as a silhouette And anticipate musics transitions, and change accordingly. Everything doesn't have to be performed at ridiculous speeds, sometimes, slowing the show up, goes with the music and sets me off. I do a nasty ping pong. lol to the show'ee... Stop moving your eyes to follow the lights, instead pick a spot behind the show giver and stare blankly in that direction, allowing your field of vision to take in the entire show, as it was intended. For a twist try taking an old pair of those clear glasses with that silly titanium tint, and smear vapor rub on them. It eliminates you ability to see the person giving the show, leaving just some crazy ass lights to look at, the fewer visual distractions the better usually. These are just my observations anyway..rolling is a personal thing that is different for some. just have fun and be safe. Do what gets your rocks off. ![]() |

OK I'll throw a few cents in here...
1. Slow down. You probably already go too fast even if you are just starting. A lot of people use speed to cover for bad technique because it makes it harder for the viewer to see your sloppy transitions between moves. By going fast you also make it harder for the viewer to follow your series of moves and therefore they get less out of the show. 2. Embrace technique rather than a smorgasborg of colors. If you're one of those people using 3-4 photons in each hand, go back to one in each hand and work on different moves with your hands. It's ok if all you do is a figure-8. There are like 4 different ways to tweak a figure-8 and make it look like a completely different move. Break it down to moving really slowly and trying to think of new ways to twist your arms/hands/etc. Learning to do liquid will help with this. 3. FLOW! FLOW! FLOW! Flow is what makes or breaks a lightshow, hands down. If you can't flow between moves well, it's very obvious to the viewer and makes your show boring. If you can flow through your moves and transitions, the viewer can't follow your hands and they never know what's coming next. Even with a figure-8, get it as smooth as possible, to the point where you can throw one without even thinking twice about it. Once you have all your moves dialed, work on transition moves, or simply, smooth ways to tweak your hands from one move to the next. Once you not only have smooth moves but smooth transitions then it's all about.... 4. ...Depth and Movement. If you just do all your moves in the same spot at the same distance from the viewers eyes, they'll fall asleep from boredom. Even if you have mind bending moves, they are nothing if they don't dance and move around the big space that is the viewers field of view. Vary how close and far you are from the viewers face as well as how far above the viewers head. In connection with this, the farther you get from a persons face, the bigger your moves should get. Consequently, the closer you get, the tighter your moves should get. 5. Tricks. These vary from person to person, but if you're really looking to properly fuck someone in the head, everyone has a few tricks that are usually right up close to the face. They vary from building type moves, to eye crossing techniques, to just crazy patterns right in front of the face. There's no specific tip I have here, just watch other people, but everyone should have one or two of these. 6. Get a mirror. No explanation needed here. Best lightshow tool you'll ever buy. 7. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. Do it at home, on your lunch break, at parties (that's a given). Give your friends shows even if they're sober. Throw on your favorite hour long DJ mix and just have a lightshow jam in your room. Work on new moves, smooth out other moves, do whatever. Do all that and then come find me at a party. I want to see your progress ![]() |

word, Kellen.
![]() too many colors are distracting. My favorite setup is two red glow sticks, on 1.5' strings. I also don't like people covered in bright colors giving me the show, it completely distracts from the lights. IMHO, anyway. |

I actually like wearing a long sleeve white shirt while giving my light shows. Shows the colors really well and makes them more vibrant since my lights are bright as a newborn albino.

practice doing variation of figure 8, get down the concept of liquid, put your WHOLE entire body into the lightshow and not just hands, free your mind and just let the music move you.

Here's my opinion:
The most important thing to remember when giving a light show is really listen to the music . When giving a light show, you want to add a visual to the bumbing sounds that you, when giving a light show, need to feel throughout your body. When practicing, try doing it to songs you haven't heard before and see how you react to the different beats and tunes. Keep practicing.![]() |

thats all very well said.
haha, Im getting into glove flow work, but the sad this is, my joints crack and freeze, so its hard for me to go fast. :[ I will get going then crack crack crack, ouch, damn, shit. So, slow isn't always bad, good for trance rooms for the people rolling and just wanna massage and melt into the good times. haha, for being given the show, ahah, I hate those glasses because the rims cut some of the show, but I always tend to criss cross my eyes, ahah, I look like an etard all the time, but hey, twice the show. ![]() |

I have to give you props for trying to learn how to use your hands. I personally Like orbits cause for me it's easier and flows better.
