I've never had a bad experience with that. In fact, people have thanked me by giving me money over the years. A good friend of mine I met by giving him a ride home from a rave in 1998 - I still know him today. I know that the "Be an asshole" policy is safe, but the "be nice" one has been a 0 risk thing for me in the past. Still though, if this excuses someone from grand theft, then I have clearly be transported to a new and strange planet.

You don't have to be an asshole, just be smart about who you let in your car. There is a happy medium between being nice to EVERYONE and being nice to no one.

Shooting down other people's ideas without offering reasonable alternatives only promotes inaction. I spent about 5 minutes just perusing some satellite pictures just as an idea of how to approach the problem - not really intending to fully promote any given site. The bay area is quite large and having looked for spots in the late 90's in LA, I have to admit that having a huge ass satellite picture of the place would have helped me get around a lot.
Oh yeah, and I didn't think the military base would be a problem - some of the largest events I used to go to were a couple miles away from Camp Pendleton and the most dangerous places in SF are often right around the police stations. |
