If you want history, then look up "acid house parties" - which was the term for "raves" in about 1988 or so. Also look up "sunrise 1989" on youtube to see some cool old school stuff. There are some old BBC documentaries from the era containing "FUD" (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) which led to a public swaying against the party culture - which was really just the natural evolution of the scene.

To see the club, rave crossover, look for Sylvesters "rock the box" on youtube from about 1985 - there are clear elements of an evolution taking place.
