word. now i'm gonna preach.
as much as i like massives, i have two big problems with them: 1) i don't have $30-$60 to shell out every month (nevermind kandi supplies, drugs if that's your bag, and the all important price of GAS), and 2) they attract large amounts of terrible people resulting in congested hallways and dance floors filled with pervs and cuddlepuddlers.
why are massives gone? i'm not the resident rl history expert, but at some point around the millenium raves weren't underground counterculture anymore. it had a public image and that image was pretty much young kids bouncing around warehouses with their eyes rolling to the back of their heads. that was definitely my first impression of raves (around age 11/12) and it was fed to me by abc 7 news. so in come the outraged parents, in comes the legislation cracking down on parties, out goes the massive rave scene.
with renegades or even just small permitted parties, you can have a party almost every week for cheap and without the hassle of begging city hall to let you dance until 2, 4 if it's 18+. you aren't necessarily obligated to allow cops into your venue (unless it's busted) and you don't need outrageous amounts of insurance. but in order for renegades to work, they have to be small because small parties are easier to hide (plus it means less trouble for the promoter than if they have 1000+ kids jammed into a venue without a permit).
undergrounds and small parties are just the bee's knees.
