Going on 3 years worth of psych/sociology/councelling courses and studies, as well as natural observation. Presenting your opinion in a hostile and targeting manner naturally makes people respond with a defensive mechanism, such as responsive anger, fear, or disregard. The best way to get people to listen to you is to get on good terms with them or become their friend, even if you don't mean it and are just using the method for alternative motives.

Just because you learn it in school, doesn't mean it's true. In fact I think most of what schools think they teach you about human interaction is a load of bullshit.

In my experience as a high school teacher, before I grew sick of the way teachers are treated in the public school system, I learned that the best way to get through to a dillusional child is to be blunt, honest, and shocking.

You have to break through the imaginary world they have setup around them, and inject some fucking reality into their lives. I am a STRONG believer in cutting through the bullshit and countering every defensive response with an equal and opposite point of view.

Maybe you just don't have the conversation skills to do this, who knows.

I kinda skimmed on whatever you just said since I'm enjoying a delicious blueberry muffin right now, but it sounds like you giving students a shock plays stereotypically into the fear response. Since a high school teacher is seen as a position of authority/power in a high-schooler's eyes, their violent jolt of criticism puts them into a state where they have to rationalize whether or not they want to go against someone that they view as having more power than them, which leads to them forcing themselves to comply. I could go into deeper relevant crap like neurotic needs and such, but since this is a forum and I'm a lazy bastard, I'm not gonna.

And a high school teacher? No wonder you hate kids.

EDIt: Oh yeah, I completely forgot to say anything about how effectiveness. Strong-headed response is more responsive to those who see you as having more power (i.e. students, employees, intimidated new ravers) but fails to hold the same power over people how view you as more equal/lesser. It all just depends on what kind of crowd you're catering to.

Actually, one of the teachers I remember the most was one who pulled me aside and told me what was up. It wasn't about fear, he was just like "What the fuck are you doing wasting your time in my class? If you don't wanna be here don't come. I know you can do this so just do it or go home, but don't waste my time too." And I appreciated that he talked to me like an adult as opposed to someone lesser than him. Got straight A's in his class.

In my jadedness, I still have an idealistic view of PLUR. But, it's also tied to very fond memories of when I was a raver baby. Maybe there was E involved, maybe not. But in my infant days, there really was an overwhelming feeling of love & unity & community in those big warehouses.

When I threw parties, I never did it for the money. Sure, it was great to break even, but throwing parties shouldn't be about money. I tried to create environments that would make other people to feel what I felt when I first started raving. For me, it was magical.
i'd like to know more about "when PLUR began" - if it's so overused now that means it must have had a basis somewhere. But was it really butchered only recently by kids of late? I mean, what's the difference between people preaching it 10 years ago and now??
