Does anybody remember this?
The first rave I went to was a Massive 2 or 3 day rave on 4th of July weekend back in 1996 or 97. It took place up in the Altamont Pass (the windmills up on the hills on the way to Los Angeles). It was friggin' crazy! They were doing a projection show up on some old drive in movie screens! Must have been a good 10k people and probably about 500 tents popped up in the middle of a giant dance arena! Somebody tell me they remember this! Those were the good old days of rave. I raved in the bay area until about 2002. Shit started going down hill. Aww... Homebase, Baldwin, Candlestick. The good stuff! The best rave I ever went to was a rave called Spring at the Santa Clara Fair Grounds. Great Vibe! Fuckin' Chemical Brothers killed it! Plus they had this cool ass airplane that flew over every half hour or so with light on the wings that said "Everybody Have Fun"! Damn, I miss that. Now I'm too old ![]() |

The only July 4th massive I know of that took place near the Altamont Pass in '96-97 was the annual Freedom, put on by The Gathering. Took place at Sandhill Ranch, a racetrack about 10 miles from the windmills.
There weren't 10k people there (more like 6, maybe 7k). There were a good 100-200 tents in the middle of the track. But there weren't drive-in movie screens, although there was a giant screen out there that I guess could be mistaken for one. Multimedia Meltdown and Mark Johns were doing visuals (I'm pretty sure), one year they shot visuals at the hillside. Another year the Space Shuttle flew over the crowd as it was re-entering. Cool ass party, if I'm talking about the same one you're referring to. Quote:
