HeH, it wasn't so unusual a while back, though the general attitude was different (as well as gas prices being a helluva lot cheaper). As long as you were going their way and were able to cover gas, then it was all cool beans. Hell, I remember someone was generous enough to give me a ride when he was actually out of the way, but that was because that person was a really chill guy.

Sadly Johnny, I can't give ya a ride since I won't be attending Shake it, but I hope you're able to score a way to get there soon
