![]() FRIGHT NIGHT OCTOBER 27, 2007 ![]() FREAKY FLOW-TORONTO Freaky Flow, originally from Philadelphia, PA, moved with his family to Toronto before reaching four years of age. He first took a serious interest in music at the age of eleven, mesmerized by soul jazz, garage house, and hiphop. Four years later, he purchased his first set of turntables and started spinning hiphop with his skilled partner, D-Wreck. Through this genre, Freaky learned the basics – scratching, cutting, and mixing – in just that prioritized order. Jungle, drumandbass, and the underground music culture soon captured his attention; Flow, in turn, transferred his knowledge of hiphop into this new, captivating music. He found that scratching and cutting had unique properties in accompaniment with jungle. Party-going patrons worldwide quickly caught on to this sound. Consequently, Freaky Flow today plays on a regular basis at major events throughout Canada, the US, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Japan, Hong Kong, Germany, Austria, England, and most recently, Slovenia, making him the most booked drumandbass DJ in Canada. Notably, for years, all of Flow’s sets featured lyrical-mastermind, MC Flipside, on the microphone, but with Flipside’s mid-2004 decision to quit touring with Flow and focus on his own stage show and studio work, Flow now finds himself rocking crowds again all on his own, just like back in the day. The transition from DJ to producer was only logical; Freaky wanted to be throwing down his own dubplates. With his then-partner in crime, MC Flipside, Freaky Flow oversaw the operation of Placebo Recordings (distributed by Stickman Records) between 1996 and 1999. The label led Flow to work with many acclaimed artists, including The Soul Grabber (Aquarius/Stickman), The Rascalz (ViK/BMG), and others. With his extremely busy schedule, however, Flow soon found it impossible to go to school full time, manage the Special Projects department at Stickman Records, DJ across the world, and direct and produce for a record label. Thus, to the dismay of many, Placebo Recordings’ release schedule and Freaky Flow’s studio production both came to an abrupt halt at the end of ‘99. Only now, after completing a film degree at the University of Toronto, and retiring from his position at Stickman (both in 2001), has Freaky Flow been able to return to the studio. And his ideas are already starting to explode back onto vinyl. Within the last two years, he has already done remix work for 311 (Volcano/Zomba/BMG), Choclair (Virgin/EMI), Pressure Rise (Aspect), Type One (GFS/Sound Gizmo), and others. New original tracks have been completed, as well, and still others are in the works. Flow is no stranger to the mix CD, either. The “Obscene Underground – Volume 1” compilation (on Stickman Records) has thus far sold nearly 20,000 units in Canada alone. Freaky Flow’s second CD, aptly entitled “World Domination” (on Moonshine Music), was released in May 2001, and surpassed his first disc in sales, hurdling over the 20,000 unit mark, making Freaky Flow the highest CD-selling drumandbass DJ of all time in Canada. A third CD – the first ever live CD that Flow has recorded – entitled “Keep It Live” (released 2002), features MC Flipside on the microphone, while his fourth mix CD, "The Envy" (Topaz Records, 2003) continues to sell well. A fifth mix CD, “Flashback” is currently in the works. Fans can also get their fix by visiting the newly refurbished [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], which features charts, games, and everything you ever wanted to know about The Flow. Yet even with all of these endeavours keeping him so busy, Flow has not lost sight of why he began to DJ in the first place. He simply possesses new tools to bring his art to more people. Indeed, the music is still his top priority. For Freaky Flow is still known as one of the most versatile and technically skilled producer/DJ's in North America, and still labeled ‘Toronto's Jungle Scratchmaster’ by promoters, producers, and partygoers alike. Swarms of partiers may consistently be found huddled around the DJ booth when Flow is on the decks, watching his every move. HALLOWEEN Weekend MICHAEL MYERS-Local13/djmikemyers.com ![]() As a member of legendary East Coast Production Company Local 13, and as the DJ credited with founding Philadelphia's trance music scene, Michael Myers has always been one of the most dedicated pioneers of the Eastern Seaboard's dance music community. An intensely serious minded and driven individual, Myers was first exposed to techno in 1992 via the music of renowned DJs Josh Wink and Frankie Bones. Although Myers began his career behind the tables spinning hip-hop records, he quickly discovered that electronic music was his calling. Drawn to the melodic tones of progressive trance, Myers found it to be "more intricate to mix than people would thinkit's a style of music that is almost a pop format." Citing influences such as Frank Zenker, Dave Clarke, Commander Tom and Jon the Dentist, Myers flawlessly blends the flavors of progressive house and trance. He has found that "the energy and emotion of the progressive trance sound is incomparable to any other form of dance music." When describing his musical style, Myers says," I play whatever moves meits energetic, 4-to-the-floor, club-oriented dance music, with the occasional break beat or electro breakdown. I like to take a record that is basically a journey within itself and fuse it with other records to take the listener on a trip." While pursuing his career as a DJ, Myers became deeply involved behind the scenes with two of Philadelphia's dance music institutions: Local 13 and 611 Records. A dynamic member of the Local 13 production company since 1995, Myers is involved in every aspect of their events. He serves as a DJ, promoter, junior partner and event coordinator, helping out with everything from booking the talent to decorating the event venue. Working with 611, Myers has been the store buyer for progressive house and trance since 1999, keeping up with the trends of what is new and hot as the genres' popularity have exploded. In 2000, Myers joined the 611 lineup as their sole trance DJ. While gaining recognition at Local 13 events for his skills behind the tables, Myers quickly amassed an impressive touring schedule. As he traveled across the U.S., playing in Chicago, Detroit, New York City, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Phoenix and Pittsburgh, among other cities, Myers' popularity exploded back in his hometown. In March 1998, Myers launched his now legendary club weekly, Faith Fridays, at Evolution, Philadelphia's pre-eminent dance club. He also maintains one of only two residencies at the club the other being held by international trance superstar Dave Ralph. The weekly has featured an extraordinary list of guests, including Ritchie Hawtin, Dave Clarke, Mike Dearborn, Max Graham, Scott Henry, Joey Beltram and Sandra Collins. In 2000 Myers picked up another residency in Philadelphia at Motion Night Club. This year he added another residency to his growing list: Club Buttons in Syracuse, N.Y. Myers talents soon caught the attention of the SHR Group, a management company that runs some of the biggest dance music labels in the U.S., including Blueline, UC and Afterhours. SHR dubbed Myers as part of the "next wave DJs", and licensed him alongside James Christian (Caffeine-NY), Slater Hogan (Indianapolis) and Paul Anthony (Chicago) to mix a compilation of their catalog tracks. Released in July 2001 on UC Records, 4X Harder Volume 4 is a four-DJ, two-disc set that features tracks from artists Lisa Pin-Ups, Nick Sentience, Don Diablo and DJ Yuri. Myers is proud to admit that he receives a profound sense of confidence knowing that's he working toward a solid career in the music industry without really having a blueprint on how its done. Says Myers: "Bringing Philadelphia an atmosphere that shows what dance music is all aboutis truly a wonderful gift."
