Tune in tonight for a live broadcast of the DC Raves Radio Show from 7 to 10PM

Featuring:

LEE BRIDGES + RAMIRO [ Give Productions | Transit | DC Hates U | r.k.i. ]

Lee began his DJ career in early 1994 as a resident at a formally well known gay club called "Brothers" in Tallahassee, FL. Branching from there, Lee has pretty much tried to spin or mix any genre out there. He can spin just about anything (including old U.K Gabber) anywhere. His journey has taken him from Gay Vocal House to Florida Breaks to Drum and Bass and now primarily spinning Progressive House.

Ramiro started listening to EDM at the age of 14 after first hearing the 1993 album United Stance of Techno. Since then, his love for electronic music has only grown. He started spinning records for the first time in 1999 and has been going strong ever since. He's dropped tracks in clubs and bars up and down the DC metro area, including Edge, Shorty's, Paradox (Fever), Nation (Cubik/Buzz), Five, Avenue, Fur, Muse, Black Hole, and Bridges, just to name a few. He has open for such notable international dj's: Paul Oakenfold, Paul Van Dyk, Hybrid, Christopher Lawrence, and Monk. In addition to bars and nightclubs, you can just as easily catch him at random house parties and field events -- anywhere there is a need for quality sound and an energetic vibe.

Ramiro's style ranges from house, trance, breaks and techno, but his greatest passion lies in progressive. He also dabbles in Drum and Bass from time to time. With his unique track selection and seamless mixing -- not to mention his boundless energy and consistent ability to move a crowd -- Ramiro has quickly become a well-known, friendly face throughout the metro area.

Both Lee and Ramiro are part of Give Productions, and have been active in organizing and booking talent for the Transit and Mass Transit parties in Northern Virginia for the last several years. You can catch them and the Give crew every Wednesday night at Transit, held at an intimate and friendly bar in the heart of Fairfax city.

The Empresarios bring soulful sun drenched summer listening to your doors all year long. This band serves up hot Latin beats mixed with dub, hip-hop, reggae, trip-hop with funk & HOUSE. And it doesn’t stop there – they’ll twist in favela beats, Tropicalia, salsa, samba, reggae, capoeira and carioca funk – so you can lounge from sunset to sundown, in the pool, at the beach house, with a Mojito and warm waves kissing your feet while you bliss out to grooves from Paradise.
Hot tracks like “Siesta,” “Fiesta de Empresarios,” and “Sabor Tropical” cozy up to downtempo and chill out; while “What You Want” and “Sohl” blend modern funk, soul, jazz, broken beats, electro and all that fits in between.
The time has come for the troupe to share their sunny halos, swap strings for synths and bring their sexy sounds and tropical tonic to fans nationwide. Heat up and chill out with the Empresarios.
This is Nu Soul/Funk/Trip-Hop/HOUSE high on sun and soul.
DERRICK CARTER
One of the pinnacles of Chicago house music's '90s wave, Derrick Carter began DJ’ing at the age of nine, spinning disco records at family reunions. Born and raised in the western suburbs, Carter was into music from a young age, but during his teens Chicago's house scene sucked him in for good. Before long Carter became a strong presence in the city's underground dance scene. "When I got my driver's license at 16 my sneak ability was validated," he laughs. "I was a fierce bedroom jock for a long time. After you mix for the love of it for six or seven years, you get it pretty tight and you can take it on the road." He got by working at dance-music specialty stores like Gramaphone and gigging at parties. Later he landed regular DJ stints at Shelter, Foxy's, and Smart Bar. Though he doesn't spin much locally anymore, when he does he attracts large crowds. Most of the time he works in Europe, where he's become a minor celebrity among dance-music aficionados :

“Its hard not to laugh on the occaisions when you’ll make 20 times what you make in Chicago on a Saturday night, but back home there are also times when you just do it for fun… So many people come up to me and say ‘Man, I had the worst day, My girlfriend left me, I locked my keys in my car, but you turned it around for two hours, and that made me able to get up in the morning’ That’s the best thing going.”

Derrick’s sets are rooted in house, but he freely travels outside club tastes, seamlessly incorporating old-school disco, soul, jazz and whatever catches his fancy.

His debut single "Love Me Right" appeared in 1987, just after he graduated from college. Another single ("Symbols and Instruments" as Mood) appeared in 1989, but the Chicago house scene faded soon after, leaving Carter and other artists with few to play for except themselves.

Thanks in part to Cajmere's and Felix Da Housecat's respective labels (Relief, Radikal Fear), Chicago house made a comeback during the mid-'90s and began to offer impressive newcomers in addition to the old guard. Carter, recording for the Organico label, returned with several singles, and an album as Sound Patrol. In 1995, he began working with a live band as the Sound Patrol Orchestra.

Several mix albums have appeared, including Cosmic Disco on MixMag and Pagan Offering on Pagan. Carter has also founded two labels (Blue Cucaracha and Classic) and remixed tracks from Chicago's own post-rock heroes Tortoise. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

Since then pioneering, innovative tracks and consequent critical acclaim have repeatedly marked Derrick out as once of the most important players in Dance music.

Carter says that due to his growing notoriety his production talents have been requested by pop-oriented acts. But he prefers to remain underground. Although enthused about his own Blue Cucaracha label and a new UK-based imprint he runs called Classic, he's reluctant to offer much explanation of either label's MO--other than each releases records when the mood strikes him:

"I like to keep myself pretty invisible. You may think I'm somewhere, but I've already left."

Freaky Flow // LA, California
(Moist Music, Furious Records, Circle Mgmt, freakyflow.com)

Freaky Flow, originally from Philadelphia, PA, moved with his family to Toronto, ON, before reaching four years of age. He first took a serious interest in music at the age of eleven, mesmerized by soul jazz, garage house, and hiphop. Four years later, he purchased his first set of turntables and started spinning hiphop with his skilled partner, D-Wreck. Through this genre, Freaky learned the basics – scratching, cutting, and mixing – in just that prioritized order.

Jungle, drumandbass, and the underground music culture soon captured his attention; Flow, in turn, transferred his knowledge of hiphop into this new, captivating music. He found that scratching and cutting had unique properties in accompaniment with jungle. Party-going patrons worldwide quickly caught on to this sound. Consequently, Freaky Flow today plays on a regular basis at major events throughout Canada, the US, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Japan, Hong Kong, Germany, Austria, England, and Slovenia, making him the most booked drumandbass DJ in Canada. Notably, for years, all of Flow’s sets featured lyrical-mastermind, MC Flipside, on the microphone, but with Flipside’s mid-2004 decision to quit touring with Flow and focus on his own stage show and studio work, Flow now finds himself rocking crowds again all on his own, just like back in the day.

The transition from DJ to producer was only logical; Freaky wanted to be throwing down his own dubplates. With several partners, Freaky Flow oversaw the operation of Placebo Recordings (distributed by Stickman Records) between 1996 and 1999. The label led Flow to work with many acclaimed artists, including The Soul Grabber (Aquarius/Stickman), The Rascalz (ViK/BMG), and others. With his extremely busy schedule, however, Flow soon found it impossible to go to school full time, manage the Special Projects department at Stickman Records, DJ across the world, and direct and produce for a record label. Thus, to the dismay of many, Placebo Recordings’ release schedule and Freaky Flow’s studio production both came to an abrupt halt at the end of ‘99. After completing his degree, however, Flow’s return to the studio garnered immediate attention: His remix resume alone includes work for 311 (Volcano/Zomba/BMG), Choclair (Virgin/EMI), Pressure Rise (Aspect), Type One (GFS/Sound Gizmo), and others.

Flow is no stranger to the mix CD, either. The “Obscene Underground – Volume 1” compilation (on Stickman Records) sold over 20,000 units in Canada alone. Freaky Flow’s second CD, aptly entitled “World Domination” (Moonshine Music), was released in May 2001, and surpassed his first disc in sales, hurdling over the 20,000 unit mark, making Freaky Flow the highest CD-selling drumandbass DJ of all time in Canada. A third CD – the first ever live CD that Flow has recorded – entitled “Keep It Live” (Moonshine Music), was released just one year later, with a fourth, "The Envy" (Topaz Records), hitting shelves the following year. A fifth mix CD, “Flashback” (Freaky Flow), dropped in 2004, featuring entirely songs and remixes involving Freaky Flow studio work. Just two years later, Freaky Flow launched his first ever solely-owned label, “Freaky Flow Recordings”, which brought “The Heavy Petters”, his protégé group, to music’s forefront. Most recently, amidst Flow’s relocation to Los Angeles, CA, fans can check out his latest mix CD, “The Furious Factor” (Moist Music), a retrospective mix containing entirely music from the renowned Canadian drumandbass label, Furious Records.

Yet even with all of these endeavours keeping him so busy, Flow has not lost sight of why he began to DJ in the first place. He simply possesses new tools to bring his art to more people. Indeed, the music is still his top priority. For Freaky Flow is still known as one of the most versatile and technically skilled producer/DJ's in North America, and still labeled ‘Toronto's Jungle Scratchmaster’ by promoters, producers, and partygoers alike. Swarms of partiers may consistently be found huddled around the DJ booth when Flow is on the decks, watching his every move.

Rip Reed // PA
(Hard Life, Good Vibes, Konkrete Jungle 215)

"uncompromising style, ferocious track selection, and uncomporable skill all describe this veteran dj. with 10 years experience behind the tables, this cat knows how to get it done. his sets are as unforgettable as they are eclectic. Rip Reed ushers in a new listening experience with every show he plays. known up and down the east coast for his take-no-priosners appraoch to Drum and Bass, its always a pleasure when he takes the stage. with anything from drum and bass to dubstep to hardcore and speedcore to original productions, you just never know whats going to happen next when hes in front of a crowd.

NOISTEK // DC
(Digital Conspiracy, Darkland Recordings, Good Vibes)

Noistek- aka Albert Brooks from Washington, D.C. Is an electronic music producer, DJ, and founder of Digital Conspiracy. He began making beats in the early 90's to go along with his hip hop lyrics and projects under the name "B-Fresh". In the late 90's he became acquainted with EDM, frequenting clubs that played industrial, house, techno, and breakbeat/hardcore. In his boredom with RAP, he turned to making this music that he was ingesting every weekend at the clubs. He changed my name..."Noiste+Technology=Music?"...NOISTEK was born. It wasn't until the release of Roni Size's 'In The Mode' that he got his first taste of proper DnB. Shortly followed by the likes of parties such as Buzz and warehouse raves like Baltimore's infamous Studio 600/Copy Cat- where he really become completely submerged in all things jungle. The 120-145 BPM tunes he was producing gave way to amen loops, exaggerated snares and over-the-top basslines roaring at 165-180BPMs! Prolific....He was at the point of making a full-length album for every season. Passing them out at every party and special event he could attend. It was getting to the point where it was an expectation of the patrons at these events- to get a new Noistek CD each time. He got the attention of Dilou Recordings, co-founded by DJ Lantern, a VA based 'pool' of DJs and producers making their way thru the ranks in the local scene. He was welcomed into the crew. Learning, watching, and waiting when Dilou's sister crew DC SKILLZ (sharing many of the same members, incl. DJ Holiday now Holidaze, DJ Illusion, Cortex & DJ Lantern),started throwing their own event at the widely missed DC Tunnel. He was given many opportunities to promote his music their and make important connections securing his first gigs at house parties and warehouse parties in Baltimore/D.C. Switching from hardware to software for production and using Final Scratch for live appearances, his original sound and DJ skills blossomed. In 2004, seeing the need to bring like-minded producers/DJs to share his passion for EDM- He founded Digital Conspiracy. The next year, his first tunes were signed to prestigious starting-point internet label DARKLAND RECORDINGS (Aus), where many cutting-edge DnB producers got there start. Followed by the successful launch of myspace pages for both Noistek and Digital Conspiracy that became two of the most popular, most visited DnB-related myspace pages in the area. 5 years and 3 Digital Conspiracy albums later, the tunes are still coming...sharp, heavy, and original as ever. The DJ skills are on-point- displayed at venues in Baltimore, D.C., VA, PA, NYC. I march on...& the Conspiracy continues...
Give Productions
started TRANSIT in the spring of 2004 to bring a taste of downtown
nightlife to the suburbs. This event has provided the DC Metro area a
stable platform for new artists to show their abilities. As always we are
looking for new talent, so if you spin, bring copies of your mixes or
live sets with you for distribution.
TRANSIT has a relaxed, friendly atmosphere, a booming
sound system, 'intelligent lighting' and a dance floor that's great for
breaking. For the kids who don't want to get too freaky in the middle of
the week; we've got pool tables, video bar games or you can just hang out
and have Fairfax's best cheese fries or perhaps some wings and burgers
while listening to some great dance music.
