i think the problem now is that there is no variety. producers are working to a particular style and sound to fit a label and/or genre and are losing their creativity.
also the sounds from the 90's were raw and original because there was nothing to compare it to.
acts like storm and mauro picotto (although not true trance) were so original and inovative.
the sounds of today are too "clean" and clinical. tunes from the 90's had that raw home-made feel. alot of hard work goes into programming analog equipment so more often than not the tracks produced had a love for their work about them, only the best would do.
now, anybody can throw together a track and get it released, whatever the quality of the song. the exclusivity has been lost to deadlines and profits.
but! there are some great tracks out there at the moment, mostly from smaller labels........who look for quality to get a reputation so in the whole i think the 90's shade it.
