Norman had no idea that 40,000 people would turn up to his first free beach party in July 2001 – an event honoring the hometown of the whole beat club scene that started as a groundswell and obviously continues to this day. This year, 250,000 people turned up to the second annual gathering and unfortunately, due to its magnitude, unanticipated security needs and medical risks, two people died. Ironically, Cook has left in a bit of his 2001 mix from the precious event, he calls “the best gig of my life,” where he stops spinning midway through (as the crowd boos) to let security get on the mic to ask people to step back and be aware of other's safety. Just prior to the security announcement, Minimal Funk comes in a third of the way through the mix with “The Groovy Thang” to remind us of the soulful, funky beginnings of dance music and Cook's own start as a bass player for The Housemartins. Soon after comes a bottomed out bass track by Basement Jaxx, “Where's Your Head At?” and one by fantastically respected Leftfield, “Phat Planet,” from their last album Rhythm & Stealth . Every track is spot-on here as are the starts and stops that make it a Fatboy Slim encounter. Throughout this funky, fun and percussive mix, a vocal of a young American guy saying “Fatboy Slim is in f**king in heaven” is looped in to let us know how the DJ is feeling about the whole experience. And, yeah, you do feel like you're there. Every track is spot-on here and if you only own one Fatboy Slim album, make it this one because it represents exactly who and what the man is. If you're already a fan, this is a lively addition to your collection. From frat boys to housewives and everyone in between, the tracks heard here are guaranteed to have you dance well past your bedtime. Parteeee on!
